EUGENE, Ore. – NM State fell in four sets (25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 25-11) to No. 15-seed Oregon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday. With the loss, the Aggies end the season at 24-8.
NM State had more kills (54-50), assists (49-46) and digs (62-48) than Oregon, but was out-blocked 11.5 to 4.0 on the match. The Ducks also hit. 315 compared to the .207 of the Aggies.
In her final match, Tatyana Battle led the Aggies with 14 kills on .400 hitting to go with nine digs and three service aces. Savannah Davison posted a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs, while Briana Ainsworth also doubled up with 22 assists and 11 digs.
NM State came out firing in the first set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead. But the Ducks responded and tied the set at 13 and eventually pulled away for the 25-22 win.
Set two was played close until after a tie at 14 the Aggies rattled off five straight points, including a pair of aces by Battle, to take a 19-14 lead. Oregon was never able to recover and NM State went on to the 25-18 win.
In set three, Oregon built its lead to four twice early. After the media timeout, the Ducks rattled off five straight points to go up 20-13, but NM State rallied to cut it back down to three (21-18). Oregon went on to the four-point win.
Oregon dominated the fourth and final set, holding the Aggies to just 11 points and six kills on .000 hitting.
