This Week in WAC Women's Tennis - March 20
Grand Canyon's Jakub Novak and Valentin Lang have been named the Men's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for March 12-18.
Novak, a freshman from Prostejov, Czech Republic, finished his week 3-0. His first came with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 win over Liberty. He was one of just two wins for the Lopes against Liberty. He won his next two matches in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 over an opponent from Hawaii and 7-6, 6-2 over Oral Roberts.
Novak and Valentin Lang, a junior from Mulhouse, France, won three straight doubles matches. They were the only doubles team to win against Liberty, 6-3. The duo then defeated a pair from Hawaii 6-4 and posted their biggest victory over Oral Roberts 6-1.
Other male singles nominees: Kansas City's Diego Giraldo had two matches end unfinished and sit at 7-5 in singles play for 2018.
Other male doubles nominees: Giraldo and Ben Stride lost 6-4 to Wichita State and ended a match unfinished 6-6 against No. 22 Oklahoma State.
Chicago State lost to Southern Utah, 1-6. Diana Borodina earned the solo point for the Cougars. She defeated her singles opponent 6-3, 6-3.
The Lopes narrowly defeated Idaho State 4-3. They lost the doubles point but responded in singles play. All four wins came in straight sets. Emilia Occhipinti won 7-5, 6-2 and Celia Morel won 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 3 spot, Celina Buhr won 6-4, 7-5 and from No. 4 Martina Lo Pumo claimed victory 7-5, 6-3.
UT Rio Grande Valley lost twice to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Southern Miss. The first was a 2-4 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Dominique Ibarra and Nethmi Waduge still managed wins. Ibarra won easy, 6-1, 6-3 and Maria Maldonado finished on top, 6-4, 6-3. The second loss was by a margin of 1-4 to Southern Miss. Ibarra posted a victory again and was the only one to do so. She defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-1. Marine Darzyan and Ibarra won their doubles match but Southern Miss claimed the other two to earn the point.
2019 WAC Tournament
The 2019 WAC Men's and Women's Tennis Tournaments will be hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley on April 26-28 in Brownsville, Texas. All six teams will compete in the Tournament as the first round will be No. 4 seed against No. 5 seed and No. 3 seed takes on No. 6 seed. No. 1 and No. 2 seeds earn a ticket straight to the semifinals. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as the WAC representative. The reigning tournament champion is NM State as they defeated NM State 4-0 in the Championship match last year.
The 2019 Tennis National Championships will take place in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus Collegiate Center on May 16-25.
