UMKC, SU, CSU, AND UTRGV REPRESENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
Grand Canyon's Lucas Grego and Chicago State's Katarina Drazic, Grand Canyon doubles team Valentin Lang and Jakub Novak and UT Rio Grande Valley's doubles team Sandra Putz and Katarina Sasaroga have been named the Men's and Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 5-11.
 
Grego, a senior from Longwy, France, moved to 6-0 on the season and leads GCU in singles wins. He picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win over Belmont and a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lipscomb. The Lopes defeated Belmont and Lipscomb 5-2 and 6-1, respectively.
 
Drazic, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, won all three singles matches this weekend. She defeated opponents from North Dakota, 6-4, 6-2, and Illinois-Chicago 6-1, 6-4. She also clinched the team match against UW-Milwaukee winning 6-2, 6-2.
 
Lang, a junior from Mulhouse, France, and Novak, a freshman from Prostejov, Czech Republic, earned two doubles wins. The pair defeated Belmont 6-4 and Lipscomb 6-1. They advance to 4-1 on the season.
 
Putz, a freshman from Munich, Germany, and Sasaroga, a freshman from Gothenberg, Sweden, improved to 3-0 over the weekend. The pair earned wins against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-0, and Lamar, 6-2. Both wins clinched points for UTRGV.
 
Other male singles nominees: UT Rio Grande Valley's Zane Kohrs earned his first win of the season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-4, 6-1.    
 
Other female singles nominees: Grand Canyon's Martina Lo Pumo earned her second singles win of the season against Colorado State… Katie Fries of Kansas City picked up her first win of the season from the No. 1 spot… NM State's Lindsay Harlas won back-to-back matches as the Aggies split the weekend against Northern Arizona and Utah State…Kyra Jung of Seattle U earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Portland… UT Rio Grande Valley's Dominique Ibarra won in her first two matches of the spring against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar.
 
Other male doubles nominees: Kansas City's Ben Stride and Diego Giraldo snagged their second win of the year over a duo from Oral Roberts… Zane Kohrs and Clement Sarradin of UT Rio Grande Valley earned the only doubles win for UTRGV against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. 
 
Other female doubles nominees: Katarina Drazic and Diana Borodina of Chicago State went 3-0 over the weekend against North Dakota, UW-Milwaukee, and Illinois-Chicago… Kansas City's Katie Fries and Thanushree Vale posted their second win of the season in the No. 3 spot… Hannah Gianan and Kyra Jung of Seattle U won 6-1 over Portland.
 
THIS WEEK IN WAC WOMEN'S TENNIS
CHICAGO STATE
Chicago State defeated Northern Illinois 6-1. The Cougars won the doubles point followed by five singles matches. Katarina Drazic, Kristina Pukhaeva, Diana Borodina, and LIzi Morgoshia all earned wins in straight sets.
 
GRAND CANYON
The Lopes lost 2-5 to Utah State and 1-6 to Weber State. Celia Morel and Celina Buhr were the only Lopes to find success against Utah State. Buhr finished her weekend 2-0 also earning the only point for GCU against Weber State.
 
KANSAS CITY
Kansas City fell 1-6 to Central Arkansas and 0-4 to Arkansas State. Michela Xibilia and Yana Grechkina won doubles against Central Arkansas for the Roos' solo victory of the weekend.
 
NM STATE
The Aggies finished the week 1-2 dropping matches to UNLV and Colorado State but grabbing a win over UC Riverside. NM State fell to UNLV 0-4 and Colorado State 2-4. Harsha Challa and Chloe Gavino won 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, respectively, against Colorado State. The Aggies swept UC Riverside 4-0 earning the doubles point and finishing just three singles matches.
 
SEATTLE U
Seattle U swept two opponents 7-0 in Puget Sound and Lewis and Clark. They fell just short to Montana State, 3-4. The Redhawks picked up all three points in singles play against Montana State Hannah Gianan, Kali McCollister, and Lily-Ana Kreutzer all earned wins.
 
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
UTRGV lost two straight matches 0-4 against TCU and UT Arlington.
 
2019 WAC TOURNAMENT
The 2019 WAC Men's and Women's Tennis Tournaments will be hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley on April 26-28 in Brownsville, Texas. All six teams will compete in the Tournament as the first round will be No. 4 seed against No. 5 seed and No. 3 seed takes on No. 6 seed. No. 1 and No. 2 seeds earn a ticket straight to the semifinals. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as the WAC representative. The reigning tournament champion is NM State as they defeated NM State 4-0 in the Championship match last year.
 
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2019 Tennis National Championships will take place in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus Collegiate Center on May 16-25.
