DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley singles player Samuel de Felipe Garcia and NM State singles player Chloe Gavino, and NM State doubles team Louis Menard and Jordy Visser and Grand Canyon's doubles team Celia Morel and Autum Prudhomme have been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Month for September.
De Felipe Garcia, a sophomore from Oviendo, Spain, went 3-0 in September. The Spaniard went undefeated at the Islander Open in Corpus Christi, Texas, on his way to capturing the Singles "A" Draw Championship. In the championship, de Felipe Garcia saw Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Pascal Lorieul and opened with a dominating 6-1 win in the first set. The second set would prove to be tougher, yet de Felipe Garcia prevailed with a 7-6 win to secure the championship.
Gavino, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., finished September with a 6-1 singles record over two invitational tournaments. Gavino went a perfect 3-0 at the Jon Messick Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., at the CSU Outdoor Tennis Complex. In Colorado, she picked up wins over Colorado's Ellen Puzak and Colorado State's Alyssa Grijalva and Emma Corwin.
Menard, a junior from Annecy, France, and teammate Visser, a freshman from Bemmel Netherlands, managed a 6-4 record in September. The duo competed in three invitational tournaments, drawing competition from the likes of Abilene Christian, Arizona, BYU, Grand Canyon, San Diego State and Washington State during September. Menard, a first team All-WAC Singles selection last year, and Visser went 3-1 at their first tournament together when they teamed up at the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. In their second tournament, the two Aggies reached the finals at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., before falling to Arizona 6-7 in a tightly contested match.
Morel, a senior from Passy, France and Prudhomme, a junior from Glendale, Ariz., went a perfect 3-0 last month as they won the third doubles flight at the Aztec Fall Classic. The pair collected victories over McNeese State, CSUN and UTEP en route to an undefeated record. Last year, Morel and Prudhomme were named to the All-WAC Doubles First Team as they finished on an impressive 11 match win streak and posted a team-best 12-6 doubles record.
Other male singles nominees: Grand Canyon's Valentin Lang reached the final in the top flight at the Wildcat Invitational... NM States Sebastian Herrera went 6-1 on the month, including a perfect 3-0 record at the Wildcat Invitational.
Other female singles nominees: Celina Buhr of Grand Canyon went 2-1 at the Aztec Fall Classic and won the consolation bracket in the second flight... UT Rio Grande Valley's Katarina Sasaroga won the "E" Draw Singles Championship at the Islander Open.
Other male doubles nominees: Grand Canyon's Valentin Lang/Jakub Novak went 2-1 at the Wildcat Invitational, picking up wins over Northern Colorado and New Mexico...UT Rio Grande Valley's Zane Kohrs/Alberto Mello finished the month with a 2-1 record with both wins coming over Laredo CC at the Islander Open.
Other female doubles nominees: NM State's Chloe Gavino/Bella Nguyen went 3-1 for the month and secured a victory over UT Permian Basin at the Aggie Invite... UT Rio Grande Valley's Sandra Putz/Ana Platisa finished September at 2-1 after getting two wins over Trinity University at the Islander Open.
