DENVER- NM State's Stijn de Haan and Chloe Gavino, Grand Canyon doubles team Valentin Lang and Jakub Novak and NM State doubles team Lindsay Harlas and Harsha Challa have been named the Men's and Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Month, respectively, for September.
De Haan, a senior from Veldhoven, Netherlands, went 7-1 through the month of September. He won the Aggie Invitational with a 5-0 record. De Haan followed with a third-place finish at the Wildcat Invite where he won his first match but lost his second. He bounced back to defeat a Brigham Young student-athlete and earn third.
Gavino, a freshman from Tucson, Ariz., earned a 4-0 record for the month of September. She won the white singles flight in the Aggie Invitational in her first collegiate outing. She defeated opponents from New Mexico, UT Permian Basin, UTEP, and NM State.
Lang, a junior from Mulhouse, France, and Novak, a freshman from Prostejov, Czech Republic, went 4-0 at the Wildcat Invite to claim the tournament victory. The pair earned two wins over Mountain West teams in Boise State and New Mexico. They followed with a 6-2 victory over Pac-12 team Arizona. In the championship match, they defeated NM State's Louis Menard and Enrique Asmar 6-3 to earn the title.
Harlas, a senior from Las Cruces, N.M., and Challa, a sophomore from Hyderabad, India, captured the doubles title at the Aggie Invitational going 4-0. They started the tournament with a victory over a team from Mesa Community College. They then defeated teammates Yadira Rubio and Neus Torregrosa before beating a pair from rival New Mexico. To win the tournament, the pair defeated UTEP in three sets.
Other male singles nominees: Chicago State's George Botha finished with a 4-0 record and earned the singles crown at the Olivet Nazarene Fall Invitational… Mathieu Rajaonah of Grand Canyon won the Wildcat Invite top singles flight… UT Rio Grande Valley's Yehonatan Kaufman picked up a first-round win in the pre-qualifying single draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
Other female singles nominees: Katarina Drazic of Chicago State produced a 5-0 record through the month… Grand Canyon's Emilia Occhipinti won the singles consolation bracket in the top flight at the SDSU Fall Invite… Ana Platisa of UT Rio Grande Valley snagged a pair of wins in her collegiate debut at the Islander Open, finishing in second.
Other male doubles nominees: Chicago State's Gonzalo Martinez/Felix Savard posted a 3-1 record and finished second at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational… Louis Menard/Enrique Asmar of NM State earned second at the Aggie Invitational and first at the Wildcat Invite.
Other female doubles nominees: Anastasiia Goncharova/Iesha Shepherd of Chicago State finished with a 4-0 record throughout the month including a 3-0 outing at the CSU Cougar Invite… Grand Canyon's Emilia Occhipini/Celia Morel won the doubles consolation bracket at the SDSU Fall Classic.
