DENVER – Grand Canyon's Mark Nikolaev has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 8-14.
Nikolaev, a senior from Seltso, Russia, led the Lopes to a win over Brigham Young, 169-130. He won three individual events and also helped the 200 medley relay to a first-place finish. He finished best in the 100 backstroke (46.78), 200 backstroke (1:47.85), and the 200 individual medley (1:50.35). His time in the 100 backstroke set a new pool record at BYU. Nikolaev holds the best time in the WAC for the 100 and 200 backstrokes and the 200 individual medley. He also leads the NCAA in the 100 backstroke and ranks ninth in the 200 individual medley.
Other swimmer nominees: Zach Nelson of Air Force helped the Falcons to a perfect 3-0 record over the weekend winning three of his four individual events… Seattle U's Greg Raper won the 50 freestyle twice and the 100 freestyle once against Air Force and Simon Fraser.
