WAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week Announced

DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley's William Akio and Utah Valley's Joseph Wheelwright have been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 1 - 7.

Akio, a junior forward from Nairobi, Kenya (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology), played a big role in UTRGV going 2-0 on the week. After picking up an assist in Friday's 3-0 win over Kansas City, he set up both goals in a 2-1 win over Houston Baptist on Sunday. His four assists in WAC play lead the league and his seven assists overall also give him the league lead. He is also tied for the lead in game-winning goals with three.

Wheelwright, a redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper from Pleasant View, Utah (Sunset HS), was strong in net to help lead the Wolverines to a pair of wins on the road. On Friday at California Baptist, he made four saves to earn his third shutout of the season in a 1-0 win. He followed that up with five saves and one goal allowed in a 2-1 win at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday. His 0.86 goals against average is fourth in the WAC this season.
