CEDAR CITY, Utah – The CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team became the last WAC team standing, earning a 70-67 road win over Southern Utah Monday in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament to keep its season alive.
After getting off to a slow start that saw the 'Runners down 9-2 with 14:27 left in the opening period, CSUB fought back to tie the game with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half. The 'Runners continued to make shots, pushing a lead to eight points at 25-17 with just under two minutes to play before SUU cut the lead to two points at half, 25-23.
Despite the Thunderbirds cutting the lead before the break, CSUB came into the second half determined and the blue and gold never looked back. After shooting just 28 percent in the first half, CSUB made 18-of-31 shots in the second half for a 58.1 percent clip.
Greg Lee led CSUB with 15 points. Jarkel Joiner added 15 points and Rickey Holden chipped in 11.
As a team, CSUB held a 38-36 advantage in rebounding and picked up 30 points in the paint, compared with just 14 for Southern Utah.
With the win, the 'Runners advance to the quarterfinal round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and will find out Tuesday when, where and who they will play next.
