WAC Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Announced

DENVER – NM State's Tristen Carranza and Brock Whittlesey have been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 15 – April 21.

Carranza, a senior outfielder from El Centro, Calif. (Brawley HS), had multiple hits and multiple RBIs in each of the Aggies' four games to earn honors. Against in-state rival New Mexico, he was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored in an 11-8 extra-inning win. He continued the strong hitting in the Aggies' WAC series at Utah Valley, going 2-for-4 from the plate in each of the three games with eight total RBIs as NM State won the series. He leads the league with 16 home runs this season and is second in triples (6) and slugging percentage (.815).

Whittlesey, a senior right-hander from Gilbert, Ariz. (Highland HS/Gateway CC), cruised to a complete game shutout victory on the road over conference foe Utah Valley. The hurler tossed 7.0 innings, only allowing four hits with five strikeouts in a 14-0 win against the Wolverines. He has 24 strikeouts against WAC squads this season as the Aggies sit just a game back of first place in the conference standings.

Other Hitter of the Week nominees: California Baptist's Damon Keith hit .429 on the week as the Lancers took the series-opening win at UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday … CSU Bakersfield's Tyler Jorgensen hit .545 in a series-win over Northern Colorado, adding a triple, home run and two RBIs to his season totals … Grand Canyon's Tyler Wyatt led the Lopes in several offensive categories as the Lopes earned a home sweep over Seattle U … Northern Colorado's Jack Pauley was 7-for-12 from the plate with six RBIs as the Bears dropped two-of-three at CSU Bakersfield … Sacramento State's Matt Smith had a team-high six hits on the week as the Hornets dropped a close non-conference tilt at Illinois State before sweeping Chicago State in WAC play … UT Rio Grande Valley's Christian Sepulveda had his first career multi-home run game on Friday, hitting two jacks in a 9-1 win over California Baptist … Utah Valley's Mick Madsen had the walk-off RBI single on Friday night in a 10-9 win over NM State to finish the game 4-for-6 from the plate.

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees: California Baptist's Matt Amrhein threw four scoreless innings of relief last week for the Lancers … CSU Bakersfield's Edgar Barclay allowed just three hits over seven innings with 10 strikeouts in a 6-2 win over Northern Colorado … Grand Canyon's Kade Mechals had his fifth scoreless start of the year, earning the win in a 6-0 win over Seattle U … Sacramento State's Parker Brahms picked up his fourth win of the season in a 10-1 victory at Chicago State … UT Rio Grande Valley's Conner Dotson struck out a career-high 11 hitters in a 9-1 win over California Baptist on Friday …  Utah Valley's Jesse Schmit earned the win on Friday night after hurling a pair of scoreless innings in a 10-9 walk-off win over NM State.
