CSU Bakersfield Men's Basketball Team Earns 2015-16 WAC Sportsmanship Award
DENVER - The CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team has been awarded the 2015-16 WAC Sportsmanship Award for its display of sportsmanship toward the Chicago State men's basketball team during the 2015-16 season.

The State of Illinois has been in the midst of a budget impasse for the past fiscal year that has left all state universities, including Chicago State, without significant portions of their operating budgets. When the Chicago State men's basketball team played at CSU Bakersfield on Feb. 6, 2016, the Roadrunner staff and team members invited the Cougars into their locker room for prayer and reflection together.

“The budget impasse has had a profound impact on the institution, including athletics and our student-athletes,” Karen Schiferl, Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Senior Women's Administrator at Chicago State said in her nomination. “CSU Bakersfield's staff and team members displayed great sportsmanship by inviting our team into their locker room and provided some much-needed inspiration for the Cougars. Knowing they supported an ‘opponent' was a testament to their sportsmanship.”

The WAC Sportsmanship Award is awarded on an annual basis and given to one WAC member institution that has demonstrated the most distinguishable act of sportsmanship throughout the academic year.
