WAC Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Announced

DENVER – Fresno  State’s Brooke Phipps and Louisiana Tech’s Meghan Krieg have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 20-26. This is the first-ever honor for Phipps and the second of the season for Krieg.

Phipps, a junior centerfielder from Corona, Calif., had a career weekend vs. Boise State as she hit a WAC-best .692 (9-of-13) with two home runs and seven RBI. She didn’t walk or strike out once and was the only Bulldog to steal a base. In game one, Phipps was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. In game two, she had a career-high five RBI on three hits. In the final game, she went 4-for-5, including a single in the top of the eighth inning to drive in an insurance run as the Bulldogs won the game 11-8 in eight innings. Entering the series, Phipps was hitting just .105 on the season and had just 10 hits and six RBI on the year.

Krieg, a sophomore from Sonora, Texas, recorded a perfect 3-0 mark on the week with a 0.74 earned run average. She opened the week with a 2-0 shutout over Stephen F. Austin, scattering three hits and striking out seven. In a 10-1 five-inning win over San Jose State, Krieg allowed two hits and one run while striking out six. In the series finale, she surrendered just two hits and one run in seven innings of work, sitting down eight. In three complete games and 19.0 innings of action, she allowed just seven hits while striking out 21 batters and holding opponents to a .109 batting average.

Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Boise State’s Kelly Sweeney hit .529 with six RBI on the week ... Tanisha Milca of Hawai‘i hit .412 with four home runs and a 1.118 slugging percentage on the week ... Louisiana Tech’s Kylie Bassett hit four homers and had a 1.333 slugging percentage on the week ... Sam Bias of Nevada hit .667 with a double, a home run and three RBI the week ... New Mexico State’s Hoku Nohara hit .529 with three RBI on the week.

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Boise State’s Mandy Klein allowed just one extra-base hit on the week ... Mackenzie Oakes of Fresno State went 2-0 on the week ... Hawai‘i’s Stephanie Ricketts went 3-1 with 17 strikeouts last week ... Nevada’s Katie Holverson went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in two starts last week ... Kim Watson of New Mexico State was 3-2 with 19 strikeouts on the week.
