DENVER – Boise State’s Troy Merritt and San Jose State’s Cristina Corpus have been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Week for April 7-13.
Merritt, a senior from Fridley, Minn. (Winona State), won his third consecutive tournament after posting an eight-under 202 (71-65-66) at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., April 7-8. Merritt entered the final round two strokes off the lead but posted a four-under 66 to win the tournament by a stroke. He had a total of 14 birdies during the three rounds, tying for the most during the tournament.
Corpus, a sophomore from San Leandro, Calif. (San Leandro HS), had her best finish at the major college level after finishing in a tie for third at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate hosted by Stanford, April 11-12. Corpus helped lead the Spartans to a fourth place team finish after posting a four-over 146 (72-74). It was her fifth top-20 finish of the season.
The other men’s nominations were Idaho junior Russell Grove and New Mexico State freshman Tim Madigan.
The other women’s nominations were Fresno State senior Laura Luethke and Nevada junior Melanie De Leon.
