Verizon WAC Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Announced

DENVER – New Mexico State’s Hoku Nohara and Fresno State’s Mackenzie Oakes have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 14-20. This is the second honor of the season and fifth of her career for Nohara and the first honor of the season and second of her career for Oakes.

Nohara, a senior infielder from Waimanalo, Hawai‘i (Kamehameha HS), hit .429 with a .636 on-base percentage and a 1.429 slugging percentage in six games against ranked opponents last week. She drew eight walks, including three intentional, recorded six hits, including four home runs, and tallied 10 RBI last week. She hit a home run in four of six games on the week, including three off Nebraska ace Ashley Hagemann. The all-time leader in home runs at NM State, Nohara broke the program’s single-season record of 17 when she hit her 18th long ball in the finale against Nebraska on Sunday. Her three-run shot against Nebraska on Friday was the game winning RBI in the Aggies' first win over a ranked team in four years. She now ranks second all-time in the WAC with 58 career home runs, four behind the all-time leader.

Oakes, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif. (Stockdale, HS), tossed 22.2 innings and recorded a 2.16 earned run average with 10 strikeouts and five walks last week. In her three starts, Oakes went 3-0 in the circle with a 0.67 earned run average to lead Fresno State to wins over No. 5 Michigan (3-1), Illinois (3-2) and Bradley (3-2). Her performance against Michigan (29-2) handed the Wolverines just their second loss of the season. The Bulldogs are now 8-0 this season in Oakes’ eight starts, which have all been complete games.

Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Boise State’s Kellie Caplan hit .600 on the week … Brooke Ortiz of Fresno State hit .444 with one triple and one RBI on the week … Hawai`i’s Sharla Kliebenstein hit .278 with three doubles and two RBI on the week … Megan Fincher of Nevada hit .600 with a double and two home runs on the week … Utah State’s Kassy Uchida hit .333 with a double and one RBI last week.

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Boise State’s Aubray Zell went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one appearance last week … Stephanie Ricketts of Hawai`i went 1-3 with a 0.64 ERA and 42 strikeouts … Louisiana Tech’s Meghan Krieg went 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA and 17 strikeouts on the week ... Mallary Darby of Nevada went 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA and 17 strikeouts on the week.
