DENVER – New Mexico State outfielder Franky Busani and Hawai‘i pitcher Nicholas Rhodes have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 17-23.
Busani, a junior from Mesa, Ariz. (Westwood HS), hit .500 (7-of-14) and registered four runs, seven hits, seven RBI, two doubles, and a pair of home runs as New Mexico State went 3-1 in WAC play. In game one of a double-header against San Jose State, Busani went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs. He registered a single, a double and a home run to lead the Aggies to a run-rule win. In a come-from-behind victory in the series finale with SJSU, Busani hit a single, double and another home run to secure the win.
Rhodes, a senior from Corona Del Mar, Calif. (Cypress College), combined for a shutout against Fresno State in 8.2 innings of work. He struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just two hits and two walks for his first win of the season. Rhodes retired the first 11 batters he faced, striking out seven in that stretch, including the first four batters of the game.
The other hitter of the week nominations: Fresno State senior Steve Susdorf; Hawai‘I senior Brandon Haislet; Louisiana Tech junior Nick Grunenwald; Nevada sophomore Kevin Rodland, and San Jose State sophomore Kyle Bellows.
