DENVER – Hawai‘i’s Kolten Wong and Fresno State’s Greg Gonzalez have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for May 16-22.

Wong, a junior second baseman from Hilo, Hawaii (Kamehameha-Keeau HS), hit .538 (7-for-13) with nine runs scored, eight RBI, three doubles, one stolen base and six walks with only one strikeout as Hawai‘i split a four-game series at New Mexico State. The series split helped UH claim a share of the WAC’s regular season title for the first time since 1992.

Gonzalez, a senior from San Bruno, Calif. (Skyline JC), improved to a perfect 10-0 this season with a 7-1 victory over Nevada in the team’s regular season finale last week. The victory helped Fresno State claim a share of the WAC’s regular season title. Gonzalez has now won 12-straight decisions dating back to 2010, the third best current NCAA win streak. For the third time this season, Gonzalez struck out 12 batters in a single game, which is a career best. Gonzalez allowed only one run in eight innings of work. His ERA dropped from 1.47 to a.144 after seven scoreless innings.

The other hitter of the week nominations: Louisiana Tech senior Joey Ford … Nevada junior Michael Turay … New Mexico State sophomore Zac Fisher … San Jose State senior Danny Stienstra.

The other pitcher of the week nominations: Hawai‘i senior Blair Walters … Louisiana Tech sophomore Caleb Dudley … Nevada sophomore Tom Jameson.
