WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

 

Boise State Broncos (4-1, 1-0 WAC)

The Broncos set a new season-high team score in overall scoring, surpassing their Jan. 2 meet total of 193.70 ... not only did the team reach a new overall high, they improved their vault, beam and floor season-highs ... on vault the team outdid their previous best score by .10, scoring a 48.475. On beam the team improved .175, scoring a 48.350 while also showing their best improvement on floor, scoring a 48.675 to better their season-high by .225 on the event.

 

Cal State Fullerton Titans (1-2, 1-1 WAC)

Fullerton’s 193.875 against No. 2 UCLA marked a season high and better than a two-point improvement from its season-opening score of 191.825 ... Fullerton’s 49.000 on vault was a season best and missed the school record on the event by .050 set back in 2001 at Oregon State ... the 48.375 on bars tied a season high while the beam score of 48.525 was also a season high ... Fullerton’s team score was its highest since scoring a 193.950 at California in a quad meet.

 

Sacramento State Hornets (3-3, 0-1 WAC)

 Sacramento State improved its team score for the second straight week ... the Hornets are now ranked 31st nationally with an average of 193.142 ... the team will hold its home opener on Friday, Jan. 30, against Illinois State ... this will be just the second all-time meeting between the two schools ... the team defeated ISU at the 2000 National Invitational Tournament ... the Hornets could possibly add Alycia Chan back to the lineup this week.

 

San Jose State Spartans (4-1, 1-1 WAC)

Lily Swann placed second on the vault with a career-best 9.850 ... San Jose State scored its fourth-best team vault score in school history with a 48.900 ... the Spartans tied for the fourth-best team score on bars with a 48.925 ... season-best 193.700 team score and the 31st best in school history.

 

Southern Utah Thunderbirds  (2-1, 2-1 WAC)

Southern Utah bounced back from a season-opening 190.450 at CS-Fullerton to cruise to an easy win over Sacramento State 195-250-193.900 at home on Friday night ... the victory draws the T-Birds even on the year at 1-1 overall and 1-1 in conference ... SUU scored the fifth-best team total in school history with a score of 48.925 on vault against Sac State ... the T-Birds also defeated Utah State 194.750-191.925 on Monday evening.

 

Utah State Aggies (0-3, 0-1 WAC)

Utah State head coach Jeff Richards returned to Southern Utah as the Aggies’ head coach for the first time Monday, leading USU against his alma mater and his former team, but came up short, losing 194.750-191.925 at the in Cedar City, Utah. The meet was USU’s Western Athletics Conference opener ... junior Heather Heinrich and sophomore Nicole Simoneau were USU’s event winners, as Heinrich won the vault with a 9.800 and Simoneau captured the bars title with a 9.850.

 

 

WAC NOTES

 

SOUTHERN UTAH’S WHEELER AND SACRAMENTO STATE’S TAKEDA NAMED WAC GYMNASTS OF THE WEEK

Southern Utah’s Elise Wheeler and Sacramento State’s Traci Takeda have been named the Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 19-25.

 

Wheeler, a junior from San Diego, Calif. (Madison HS) tied her career high with a 39.325 in the all-around en route to the individual title at a dual meet against Sacramento State. Wheeler finished the meet by placing first on bars (9.875), second on vault (9.825), third on beam (9.825), and tied for second on floor (9.800). 

 

Takeda, a junior from Clovis, Calif. (Clovis HS) captured her first career event title by winning beam in a dual meet at Southern Utah. The junior scored a career-high 9.925 in the event to easily better her previous career high of 9.750. Her score on beam ties her for the second-highest mark in school history and is the best by a WAC gymnast this season.

 

Other Gymnast of the Week nominees included: Cal State Fullerton sophomore Alaina Baker; Sacramento State senior Marina Borisova; and San Jose State senior Veronica Porte.

 

Other Specialist of the Week nominees included: Boise State junior Taylor Jacob; Cal State Fullerton sophomore Shelly Cooper; San Jose State freshman Thomasina Wallace; and Southern Utah junior Melissa Johnson.

 

SACRAMENTO STATE TO HOST WAC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIP

This year’s Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championship will take place at Sacramento State’s Hornets Gym on March 21. The event will begin at 6 p.m. (PT). For more information on the championship, visit www.wacsports.com.
