DENVER’S MARTIN AND MERCER NAMED WAC GYMNASTS OF THE WEEK
Denver’s Moriah Martin and Louise Mercer have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 20-26.
Martin, a sophomore from Lake Mary, Fla. (Lake Mary HS) tallied a career-high 39.425 in the all-around in the Pioneers victory over Sacramento State on Saturday. Martin won the vault and floor titles as well, recording 9.900 in both events. The sophomore added a 9.875 on bars and a 9.750 on beam.
Mercer, a senior from Nottingham, England (The Becket School) inked her name into the DU record books on Saturday, tying 2009 DU graduate and Venezuelan Olympian Jessica Lopez for the third-best bars score in school history with a 9.975. Mercer’s bars performance earned her a second-consecutive title in the event.
Other Gymnast of the Week Nominees: San Jose State senior Thomasina Wallace won the all-around title with a 39.350 against California and Maryland … Utah State senior Rebecca Holliday posted a career-high 38.925 to place second in the all-around at the BYU tri-meet.
Other Specialist of the Week Nominees: Sacramento State junior Nicole Meiller scored a career-high 9.875 on bars to tie for second against Denver … San Jose State senior Katie Valleau won the floor title with a 9.900 against California and Maryland … Southern Utah freshman Ana Jaworski scored career highs on vault and floor with matching 9.800’s ... Utah State freshman Susie Miller earned her first event title of her career by sharing the floor title at the BYU tri-meet with a 9.825.
UTAH STATE TO HOST 2012 WAC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIP
This year’s Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championship will take place at Utah State’s Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah on March 24. The event will begin at 6 p.m. (MT). For more information on the event, visit the WAC Championships page at www.wacsports.com.
WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Denver Pioneers (6-4, 0-0 WAC)
Denver is ranked No. 19 in this week’s GymInfo Poll ... last week’s victory over Sacramento State was the Pioneers first Western Athletic Conference win ... Denver hosts its first quad meet of the season, welcoming Western Michigan, No. 24 West Virginia and No. 13 Missouri ... the Pioneers and Western Michigan will take a day off before making the short trip to Colorado Springs to compete against Air Force ... DU is in the top 25 in the nation in all four events.
Sacramento State Hornets (4-7, 1-1 WAC)
hrough three rotations the Sacramento State gymnastics team went toe-to-toe with 20th-ranked Denver on Saturday night at Hamilton Gymnasium ... unfortunately for the Hornets, the final rotation was not as kind and the Pioneers prevailed 196.400-193.750 ... Nicole Meiller scored a career high 9.875 on bars to tie for second place against Denver ... the junior has now scored 9.800 or higher in her last four routines ... Meiller also set a career high on vault with a 9.825 against DU.
San Jose State Spartans (7-4, 2-0 WAC)
Four different Spartan women’s gymnasts won or tied for first on all four events Friday night as San Jose State scored its second-highest team score of the season with a 194.900 ... he tri-meet at Spartan Gym also featured Maryland who scored a 194.250 and California who had a 192.475 ... Thomasina Wallace won three events and the all-around to lead the Spartans ... this week, SJSU travels to take on UC Davis in a dual meet.
Southern Utah Thunderbirds (3-8, 1-2 WAC)
Southern Utah suffered a narrow defeat at Brigham Young University on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cougars by .175 (194.100-193.925), but extended a 24-meet winning streak over Utah State as the Aggies finished with a 193.625 ... Ana Jaworski scored career highs on vault and floor with matching 9.800’s ... SUU travels to face Auburn this week.
Utah State Aggies (3-8, 1-2 WAC)
Utah State’s 193.625 Saturday came from posting a season-high 48.700 on vault, as well as a 48.750 on floor, which is the Aggies’ second-highest score on the event ... USU registered its third-best mark on beam with a 48.025 and also scored a 48.275 on bars ... all four of senior Rebecca Holliday’s career event wins have come in the last four meets, and Saturday’s beam win was her second-straight beam title after tying for the bars crown in the previous two meets ... USU travels to take on Boise State this week.
