ATHLETES OF THE WEEK (Jan. 30-Feb. 5)
San Jose State’s Julia Craddock and Fresno State’s Hannah Prigge have been named the Verizon WAC Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 5.
Craddock, a junior from Litchfield Park, Ariz (Millenium HS), won four events last Saturday to help lead the Spartans to a 184-115 victory over WAC rival Fresno State. Craddock began her afternoon swimming a leg on the Spartans’ winning 200-meter medley relay team that swam 1:47.31. She later took the top spot in 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly (58.23 and 2:04.52), and the 200-meter individual medley (2:08.49). Craddock’s time of 2:04.52 in the 200 fly was a pool record at the Fresno State Aquatics Center. She totaled 38 points during the win, the Spartans’ seventh in a row on the season.
Prigge, a sophomore from Rocklin, Calif. (Whitney HS), won the 3-meter diving competition during the loss to Fresno State last Saturday. With a score of 310.65, she broke her own school record of 295.73, which she set earlier this season. Her score beat the second place finisher by more than 30 points. She added a second-place finish in the 1-meter diving competition.
Other swimmers nominated: Fresno State freshman Alex Madsen … Idaho freshman Rachel Millet … New Mexico State freshman Jessica Legge.
Other divers nominated: Idaho junior Paige Hunt … New Mexico State senior Carly Smith.
Fresno State Bulldogs (4-6)
Fresno State fell to San Jose State 184-115, last Saturday ... freshman Alex Madsen won the 100 Yard Backstroke with a season-best time of 58.93 ... junior Hannah Prigge took the 3-meter dive with a score of 310.65, breaking the school record she set a couple months ago with a 295.73 ... junior Stacey Luke won the 1-meter competition with a score of 276.97 ... also picking up wins in the swimming events were Dani Yoho, in the 50 Free (23.56), Brittany Buna, in the 200 Backstroke (2:09.56) and freshman Courtney Sheehan, in the 500 free (5:04.27) ... the Bulldogs are off until the WAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio, Texas.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (0-3)
In its last action, Hawai’i fell 172-123 in a dual against Wisconsin, on Jan. 14... senior Christa Prior won both the 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter backstroke events against Wisconsin ... she touched at 56.19 in the 100 backstroke and at 2:01.91 in the 200 backstroke ... she was also on two relay teams, earning a first-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle relay and second-place in the 200-meter medley relay ... senior Daniella Nero won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions ... her score of 339.50 on the 3-meter board was good for second-best in the WAC this season ... Hawai’i is off until the WAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which will take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio, Texas.
Idaho Vandals (3-4-1)
Idaho defeated Palouse rival Washington State, 159.5-134.5, last Saturday ... freshman Rachel Millet won the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly ... Millet was also a member of the 400-meter freestyle relay, which helped the Vandals seal the victory ... junior Paige Hunt swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for the second consecutive week ... junior Kelsie Saxe won twice, winning the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke races ... the Vandals are off until the WAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio, Texas.
Nevada Wolf Pack (5-1)
In its last action, Nevada swept Seattle in two dual meets on Jan. 28, winning the first 53-38 and the second 130-75 ... junior Gabby Guieb won the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:08.53 and the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:11.64, and was also on the winning 200-meter medley relay team ... junior Jojo Mi turned in two individual wins, topping the field in the 500-meter freestyle (5:07.60) and 1,000-meter free (10:27.88) ... Nevada is off until Feb. 21, when it battles San Jose State in San Antonio, Texas ... the dual will serve as a final tune up before the WAC Swimming & Diving Championships, which take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio.
New Mexico State Aggies (3-6-1)
New Mexico State tied rival New Mexico, 160-160, last Saturday ... NMSU extended its unbeaten streak over in-state rival New Mexico to five duals ... senior Brittney Moore led the Aggies with a pair of wins in the 500-meter freestyle and 1,000-meter free ... freshman Jessica Legge earned two individual victories in the 100-meter breast roke and 200-meter breaststroke ... junior Beth Cate scored with top honors in the 200-meter butterfly, 200-meter individual medley and second place in the 100-meter fly ... freshman Kara Schweitzer provided points with a third-place finish in the 200-meter fly ... the Aggies are off until the WAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio, Texas.
North Dakota Fighting Sioux (6-6)
North Dakota swept two dual meets in its last action, Jan. 27 and 28, dropping South Dakota State 166.5-127.5, and South Dakota 188-111... the Fighting Sioux won 24 of the events during the two duals ... junior Veronica Medon had a big weekend, with three individual wins, one relay win, two second place finishes and one third place finish ... sophomore Rachel Waldbillig won the 3-meter diving competition during both duals, and added a second place finish in the 1-meter competition vs. SDSU ... UND is finished with the regular season, as the Fighting Sioux will next compete at the WAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio, Texas.
Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (7-5)
In its last action, Northern Arizona competed as a split squad ... the divers attended the Falcon Diving Invite in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Jan. 27-28 ... the swimmers topped Grand Canyon, ranked No. 3 in the D-II rankings, 152-100, on Jan. 28 ... junior Fi Connell, sophomores Rachel Palmer and sophomore Stirling Smith each won two individual swimming events ... the divers were paced by senior Holly Frost’s fifth-place finish in the 3-meter competition ... the squad will have three weeks off to further prepare for the WAC Swimming & Diving Championships, which will take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio, Texas.
San Jose State Spartans (7-1)
San Jose State defeated WAC foe Fresno State, 184-115, closing out the regular season last Saturday ... junior Julia Craddock won three individual events, and was part of a relay win, leading the Spartans ... her time of 2:04.52 in the 200-meter butterfly was a pool record at the Fresno State Aquatics Center ... as a team, the Spartans won 10 events, including all breaststroke and butterfly events, and three of the five freestyle events ... the dual meet win was the team’s seventh in a row this season ... the Spartans are off until the Feb. 21, when SJSU faces Nevada in San Antonio, Texas... the dual will serve as a final tune up before the WAC Swimming & Diving Championships, which will take place Feb. 22-25, in San Antonio.
