DENVER - New Mexico State's Marc Westgate and Idaho's Vicky Lozano have been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Month, for the month of September.
Westgate, a sophomore from Loughborough, England (Loughborough Grammar School), went 6-2 in singles competition and 3-1 in doubles play, claiming two consolation titles. At the Baylor Invitational, Westgate was the only Aggie to advance the round of 16, before losing to top-seeded Costin Paval of Oklahoma, the No.17 player in the ITA preseason rankings. In the first singles matches of his college career, Westgate captured the singles consolation championship at the Aggie Invitational. He also teamed with partner Germaine Degardin to win the Aggie Invitational doubles consolation draw.
Lozano, a sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico, went 3-1 during September in singles play, advancing to the semifinals of the Washington State University Cougar Classic top flight. Lozano won in straight sets against the top players from Boise State, Portland State and Montana State, before falling to the eventual tournament champion, Liudmila Vasilieva of Washington State. In doubles play, Lozano and partner Sophie Vickers went 2-1, defeating the number one pairings from Gonzaga and Portland State.
