WAC Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced

DENVER – Nevada’s Wessim Derbel and Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin have been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 2-8.

Derbel, as senior from La Marsa, Tunisia (Lycee Sportif el Menzah), went undefeated last weekend, helping Nevada to a sweep of Portland State and a 1-1 record. He came from behind to defeat New Mexico State’s Matej Stakne, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, in a conference dual and soundly defeated Portland State’s Roman Marqoulis 6-0, 6-0. He partnered with Fernando Sunago to go 2-0 in doubles play as well. Derbel is now three singles wins away from tying the single-season record at Nevada (27, Laurent Garcin – 2007-08). With two matches remaining in the regular season and WAC tournament play still to come, Derbel is six matches from tying Garcin’s career mark of 72 wins.

Jodoin, a sophomore from Varennes, Quebec (Ecole Georges High School), went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles.  The 47th-ranked singles player picked up two wins at the No. 1 spot, improving her record to 14-3 on the season. Against Miami, she earned the only Bulldog singles victory when she bested No. 18 Anna Bartenstein, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. Against FIU she defeated Rita Maisak, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, she and partner Laura Pola fell to No. 24-ranked duo of Liat Zimmerman and Melissa Bolivar, 8-4 and then beat FIU’s Maisak and Sarah McLean, 8-2. The sophomore was named Fresno State’s Sysco Athlete of the Week.
