Verizon WAC Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced - March 26
Brooklyn, a sophomore from Hillingdon, England (Langley Grammar School), went undefeated in singles and doubles play last weekend. On Thursday, he helped Hawai’i earn a conference win against New Mexico State, defeating Matej Stakne in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4. He, along with partner Dymtro Kovalyov, defeated Stakne and Luis Ramirez, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Brooklyn followed that up with three wins over ranked opponents in the Warriors next two duals. Against No. 18 Fresno State, Brooklyn defeated Remi Boutillier, the 22nd-ranked player in the country, 4-6, 7-5, (11-9). Against No. 27 Tulsa, he defeated Japie De Klerk, the 68th-ranked player in the nation, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8). Teamed with Kovalyov, he added an 8-5 doubles win over Boutillier and Francis Alcantara, who were ranked No. 65 in the nation.
Davis, freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah (Cottonwood HS), went undefeated in both singles and doubles competition to help the Aggies go 2-1 last weekend. In Friday's match against San Francisco, Davis defeated Melinda Akerbrant in two sets, 7-6, 6-3. She, with partner Jaci West, defeated Julie Wartenburger and Blair Reed in doubles, 8-3. On Saturday, USU played and won its first WAC match against Louisiana Tech. Davis defeated Vivian ten Dolle in No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2, and in doubles, beat Elne Barnard and Anna Zurek, 8-3. Against No. 74 Santa Clara, Davis claimed an intense three-set win over Kelly Lamble, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 (16-14). She and West took down Katie Le and Jessica Arga in doubles, 8-7 (7-6). With the weekend's wins, Davis improved to 12-1 in singles action and 11-2 in doubles.
