DENVER – Fresno State’s Francis Alcantara and Idaho’s Victoria Lozano have been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 27-March 4.

Alcantara, a sophomore from Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines (Xavier University High School), picked up a victory over No. 42 San Diego State’s Thorsten Bertsch and reached the quarterfinals at the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championships. Alcantara’s victory over Bertsch was crucial in the Bulldogs 4-3 victory over the Aztecs on March 1. In doubles action during the dual, Alcantara, along with Partner Remi Boutillier, defeated San Diego State’s squad of Javier Pulgar and Hunter Nicholas. Later, with partner Jean-Charles Diame, Alcantara defeated doubles pairs from Arizona State and Southern Cal at the doubles championship, before falling in the quarterfinals to the runner-up duo of Kris Kwinta, an ex-UCLA assistant, and John Peers, a former Baylor player.

Lozano, a sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico, went undefeated last week, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles matches. In No. 1 singles play, Lozano earned straight-sets victories over opponents from UTEP, New Mexico and New Mexico State, as the Vandals went 2-1 on the week. Along with partner Almudena Sanz, Lozano also grabbed a No. 1 doubles win in each dual, winning all three matches by at least 3 games.
