RENO, NEV. - Nevada held on to win the 2007 Wells Fargo WAC Championship at the par 72, 7,269 yard Hidden Valley Country Club. The Wolf Pack won the championship by one stroke after carding an 18 over, 306 for the highest team round of the blustery final day. The Wolf Pack finished with a three day total of four under, 860 to win its first WAC men's golf title. Hawai’i shot a six over on the final day to finish in second place with a combined score of three under, 861. Boise State finished in third at two over after leading halfway through the final round. Fresno State finished fourth at five over followed by New Mexico State and San Jose State in fifth at nine over. The Spartans had the low team round of the day with a one over, 289.
Fresno State’s Grant Doverspike claimed the individual title shooting a three round score of eight under, 208. The freshman from Bakersfield, Calif. was the leader after all three rounds. Doverspike fired an opening round low of 66 followed by a 67 and a 75. Utah State’s Devin Daniels finished second with a seven under, 209 after tying for the lowest score of the second round with a six under, 66. Hawai’i’s Pierre-Henri Soero finished in third with a three round total of six under, 210. Soero tied with San Jose State’s Rosco Valentine for the low score of the final round with a two under, 72.
Also announced today were the all-WAC teams and Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year awards as voted upon by the nine coaches in the league. Nevada freshman Taylor Coffman won both the Freshman of the Year and the Player of the Year awards. Nevada coach Rich Merritt was named the Coach of the Year.
