Hawai'i Wins Seventh WAC Volleyball Tournament

Top-seeded Hawai`i defeated second-seeded New Mexico State, 3-1 in the final of the WAC Volleyball Tournament in Reno, Nev. This was the third meeting between Hawai`i and New Mexico State. The Aggies defeated the Rainbow Wahine in Las Cruces during the regular season, while Hawai`i stopped New Mexico State in Honolulu.

The Rainbow Wahine captured its seventh WAC Tournament title with a 30-27, 30-20, 27-30, 30-22 win over New Mexico State. Hawai`i has won seven-straight tournaments after losing the first two WAC Tournament to BYU in 1996 and 1997. The Rainbow Wahine earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore Jamie Houston was named tournament MVP after adding 16 kills and seven digs in the championship match.

Day Two Action
New Mexico State earned a berth in its first WAC Volleyball Tournament championship match with an efficient 30-19, 30-19, 30-13 win over third-seeded Idaho. Senior setter Jackie Choi set a WAC Tournament record with five service aces as the Aggies got out to a strong start. Sophomore Amber Simpson added 11 kills for New Mexico State.

Hawai`i defeated San Jose State in three close games, 30-26, 30-27, 30-24. Sophomore Jamie Houston led the Rainbow Wahine with 25 kills. Three-time WAC Player of the Year, Kanoe Kamana`o added 50 assists and seven digs in the win. Hawai`i has appeared in the championship match in all nine WAC Tournaments, winning six. BYU is the only other WAC team to win a WAC Tournament, capturing the first two in 1996 and 1997. 

Day One Action
In the first match of the 2006 WAC Volleyball Tournament, No. 8 Fresno State defeated No. 9 Louisiana Tech, 27-30, 30-26, 31-29, 30-23. The Bulldogs will now face top-seeded Hawai`i at 7:30 p.m. PT. WAC Freshman of the Year Lacey Gera paced the Bulldogs with 11 kills. Her sister, Lisa Gera, added 31 assists for Fresno State. Louisiana Tech ends the season 6-28.

Second-seeded New Mexico State defeated No. 7 Boise State, 28-30, 30-15, 31-29, 30-18 in the second match of the day. The Broncos won game one behind the strong play of first-team all-WAC selection Cameron Flunder. The Aggies recovered to capture the next three games. Third-seeded Idaho became the second team to advance to the semifinals with a 30-20, 16-30, 30-28, 29-31 win over sixth-seeded Utah State. This is the Vandals first appearance in the WAC Tournament semifinals. Amanda Bowman and all-WAC selection Saxony Brown both added double-doubles for Idaho. The Vandals will meet New Mexico State in the first of two semifinals at 5:00 p.m. PT on Thursday.

Fifth-seeded San Jose State delivered the upset with a 25-30, 30-27, 30-18, 30-28 win in the third four-game match of the day. The Spartans will be making their fifth appearance in the WAC Tournament semifinals. The Spartans last advanced to the semifinals in 2003 when they eventually lost in the championship match to Hawai`i. Hawai`i defeated Fresno State, 30-16, 30-17, 30-25.

The WAC Tournament concludes on Friday, Nov. 24 with the championship match. The final can be seen on and can be seen live on CSTV at 7:30 p.m. PT.
