WACO, Texas-(GCU Media Relations) For the second consecutive year, Grand Canyon University senior first baseman Michael Pomeroy has been tabbed as the best defensive first baseman in the country after garnering national NCAA Division I ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award honors, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) today.

He picked up the same award last season at first base, as he also won the honor when the Antelopes were members of the Pacific West Conference and NCAA Division II.

Additionally, he was yesterday named to the West Region Gold Glove Team.

"This is exciting for Michael and for our program," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "He worked so hard on his defense. It has always been a high priority to him and we have been fortunate to have him. Michael saved us so many times because of his ability at first base."

"To win the Gold Glove in back-to-back years and at two different levels in the NCAA, that is a credit to him for how hard he worked," added Stankiewicz. "That is something that no one can take away from him."

During his senior campaign, Pomeroy collected 510 putouts and 54 assists in 564 total chances without an error for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. He started each of GCU's 53 games at first base this past season.

Along with his outstanding numbers defensively, Pomeroy hit .309 (67-for-217) with 21 runs scored, nine doubles, a triple, home run, and 31 RBI during the 2014 season. He strung together a 13-game hit streak from April 18-May 11, during which time he hit .417 (25-for-60). Pomeroy collected his 200th career hit in the eighth inning on May 5 at Washington.

Pomeroy last committed an error on April 26, 2012, ending his career with 110 consecutive errorless games.

"I'm glad that all of my hardwork has paid off and that I was able to finish my career at the top of my position," said Pomeroy. "I am also excited to bring this award to GCU for the second year in a row."
