TUCSON, Ariz. -(Sac St. Media Relations) Sacramento State freshman left handed pitcher Sam Long (Rancho Cordova, Calif./Del Campo HS) has been named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Long, who graduated high school a semester early to enroll at Sacramento State in the spring, is the fourth Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American the Hornets have had in the last three years, following Rhys Hoskins in 2012 and Chris Lewis and Sutter McLoughlin in 2013. He was also the third consecutive Hornet to be named WAC Freshman of the Year following Hoskins and Lewis.

Also an all-WAC second team selection, Long went 8-2 this season with a 3.03 ERA in 15 starts and 17 total appearances, becoming the squad’s Saturday starter early in the year. In 95.0 innings pitched he allowed just 32 earned runs with 50 strikeouts and just 26 walks. He had a .233 opposing batting average and a 1.15 WHIP and threw two complete game shutouts.

Sacramento State went 12-3 in Long’s 15 starts, the squads most wins with any starting pitcher. In WAC play, Long went 5-0 while posting a 2.24 ERA in conference games and holding opponents to a .213 batting average. He allowed two or fewer runs in 12 of his 17 appearances and started Sacramento State’s first NCAA Div. I Tournament game last Friday against Cal Poly.
