This is the first installment of WAC SAAC Gives Back, which will highlight some of the community service efforts of the Student-Athlete Advisory Councils at each of the nine WAC schools.
WAC SAAC President Dalton Kelley, a wrestler at Bakersfield, and other members of the Bakersfield SAAC, participate in Project 3,000, a commitment by the Bakersfield Athletic Department to log more than 3,000 hours of community service each academic year.
Among the community service projects the Bakersfield SAAC has participated in are helping out at Senior Olympics, Running for Ronald Events at local elementary schools, a Holiday Toy Drive that donated more than 200 new toys to the Ronald McDonald house, and picking up trash on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
The Bakersfield SAAC also hosts Roadrunner Olympics, where athletic teams compete against each other year round for points based on team GPA, going to other teams' contests and community service. The year-long competition is capped with a Roadrunner Olympics Day where teams compete in tug of war, obstacle courses and other wacky games.
Kelley won Roadrunner of the Year in the spring of 2013 and the Student Service Award for outstanding community engagement in the 2012-13 school year.
