DENVER - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its final list of All-American honors on Monday. Based on results from the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, 17 Western Athletic Conference student-athletes earned the distinction of being All-Americans.
First-team USTFCCCA All-America honors are awarded to those who earn any portion of a team point at the national championships, or reach an eight-entrant final. Second-team All-America honors are handed out to those whose final placing in the national meet range from ninth to 16th place.
Those who participated at the final site but did not place in the meet’s top 16 are listed as honorable mention for the All-America award.
Idaho had a pair of athletes named first team All-Americans on the men's side, Jeremy Klas (pole vault) and Ugis Svazs (javelin). Klas finished sixth overall, clearing a top height of 5.50m (18-0.5). Svazs placed eighth in the javelin, launching a distance of 70.71m (232-0). Also representing the Vandals was Liga Velvere (400m hurdles) who earned second-team honors with a time of 59.28, placing her 14th.
UT Arlington's decathlon standout, Romain Martin earned himself yet another first team All-American honor. The Frenchman totaled 8,013 points for a sixth-place finish. Ashly Wright was named honorable mention for her efforts in the women's 800m. She placed 23rd for the Mavs with a time of 2:14.45.
Louisiana Tech's 4x100m relay team of Trey Hadnot, Devin Henderson, Dennis Richardson and Niko Richey finished 12th with a time of 39.71. All four members earned second team honors. A pair of LA Tech hurdlers scored honorable mention. Yusuf Muhammad ran a 52.16 in the men's 400m hurdles, placing him 18th. Kim Francis sprinted to a 13.34 in the women's 100m hurdles, giving her a 21st-place finish.
Texas State's Timothy Young earned second team honors in the men's 110m hurdles. He turned in a time of 13.87, placing him 14th overall. Kelsey Titzman, the 2013 WAC women's shot put champion, finished ninth overall in Eugene. She tossed a distance of 16.60m (54-5.5), to give her second team honors. Her Bobcat teammate, Danessa Lyssy, earned honorable mention for her efforts in the women's heptathlon. She totaled 5,294 points, placing her 21st overall.
Utah State's Will Henry ran in the 100m dash. He turned in a time of 10.25 good enough for 16th-place and a second team All-American honor. The Aggies also had Chari Hawkins competing over the weekend. Hawkins earned second team honors in the women's heptathlon, totaling 5,598 points and an 11th-place finish. Hawkins also earned honorable mention for her 21st-place finish the high jump (1.72m/5-7.75).
UTSA's Joshua Smith ran the 400m hurdles in a time of 51.27, helping him to a 13th-place finish and second team honors.
