Sacramento State third baseman Will Soto was named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for April 22-28.

Soto, a third baseman from Elk Grove, Calif. (Elk Grove HS), led the Hornets to a 4-1 record last week that included non-conference wins over Saint Mary’s and San Francisco, and two wins in a three-game series over WAC foe Louisiana Tech. Soto hit .412 (7-for-17). He tallied two runs, one double, one triple, one home run, one walk and a league-best 13 RBI on the week. He slugged .765 and had an on-base percentage of .444 on the week. Soto hit safely in all five games and is currently riding an eight game hitting streak.

Right-hander Sutter McLoughlin was named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for April 22-28.

McLoughlin, a freshman from Sacramento, Calif. (Rio Americano HS), picked up three saves during the week, allowing only one hit in four innings of work. The true freshman set the Sacramento State single-season record for saves after capping Sunday’s 4-1 win over Louisiana Tech. He struck out all three batters he faced in Sunday’s game. During the week, McLoughlin struck out eight batters of the 13 batters he faced in only four innings of work.

As of April 28, New Mexico State ranks third in the nation in walks with 259. Dallas Baptist ranks fourth nationally with 45 home runs. New Mexico State ranks eighth in home runs with 42. Sacramento State ranks sixth in the nation with a 0.981 fielding percentage. Individually, UTSA’s Mike Warren ranks fourth nationally as he has been hit 20 times by a pitch this season. Dallas Baptist’s Duncan McAlpine ranks eighth nationally in home runs with 12.

Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) has been selected to the first Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas. Shyrock is the lone Western Athletic Conference representative and is 1-of-25 members of the first Brooks Wallace Award Watch List.

Roadrunner ace Jeff McKenzie was selected to the inital watch list for the 2013 Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond Sports and presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions Apr. 13. McKenzie, who is the lone WAC representative on the list which features 41 players from across the country. The award will be given on June 29.

Bakersfield’s Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) has been selected as 1-of-25 finalists for the 2013 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award. The Olerud Award, presented on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s annual Night of Champions, recognizes baseball players who excel both on the mound and in the field.

CSU Bakersfield is currently receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top-30 poll.


CSU Bakersfield (29-16, 12-6 WAC)
Jeff McKenzie extended his school record with his 10th victory of the season Friday night at Texas State ... McKenzie is now 10-1 on the year and is second in DIvision I in victories ... Dylan Christensen was named as 1-of-25 finalists for the 2013 John Olerud Award, emblematic of Division I’s Top 2-way player ... Christensen is hitting .314 with one home run and 29 RBI’s, he is 1-4 with five saves as a pitcher ... Oscar Sanay has reached base in 25 consecutive games, two away from the CSUB season high of 27 set by Tyler Shryock earlier this season ... Sanay hit .375 last week with two RBI’s ... James Barragan appeared in three of the four games played last week by the Roadrunners on the mound ... CSUB has now taken a 12-10 all-time series lead against Fresno State after defeating the Bulldogs on Apr. 23 ... CSUB and Fresno State play for the fourth and final time Apr. 30 in Fresno.

Dallas Baptist (22-22, 9-9 WAC)
Dallas Baptist went 1-3 last week ... the team dropped a non-conferen mid-week game at home to Baylor 9-5 ... the Patriots then dropped two of three games at home against WAC foe UTSA ... DBU dropped game one 5-4, won game two 5-2 and then dropped game three 7-2 to the Roadrunners ... Michael Miller led the Patriots at the plate, batting .500 with three runs, nine hits, three doubles, one triple and three RBI ... Boomer Collins hit .333 with seven hits, three runs scored, one double and an RBI ... Austin Listi hit .267 with four hits, two runs, one triple and a apair of RBI ... Joseph Shaw pitched 6.1 innings on the week, allowing only one run and two hits, while compiling six strikeouts ... Jake Johansen pitched 7.0 innings and collected 10 strikeouts ... DBU hosts Oklahoma on Tuesday before traveling to UT Arlington for a three-game WAC series.

Louisiana Tech (15-30, 3-15 WAC)
Tech began the week with a 17-9 victory over in-state foe Grambling State in a game that saw the Bulldogs score a season-high 17 runs off 13 hits ... the Bulldogs made their final road trip to the West Coast as a Western Athletic Conference affiliate to face WAC foe Sacramento State for the final time in regular season play ... Tech was hot out of the gates and took the first game of the series 5-4 behind a three-RBI performance by Bulldog outfielder Sam Alvis ... the Bulldogs’ bats came alive as well in the first game as Tech hitters recorded 13 hits in the win ... the Hornets took the second game of the weekend Saturday with a 1-0 victory after scoring an unearned run early in the contest to tie the series at 1-1 as the Sacramento State pitching staff shut out the Bulldogs ... Sunday’s rubber match saw Sacramento State prevail 4-1 over Tech to take the weekend series at home.    

New Mexico State (24-21, 9-9 WAC)
The Aggies lost in its last non-conference game to Texas Tech last week and returned home dropping 2-of-3 games to UT-Arlington on the weekend ... senior Bobby Lecount hit .467 (7-of-15) in four games last week to go along with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage ... of his seven hits, five were doubles and one was a home run ... senior Ryan Beck was stellar in his start against UT-Arlington on Saturday as he allowed just one run in his first complete game of the year ... he held the Mavericks to just three hits with the first hit coming in the fourth inning ... Beck allowed two hits in the fifth but none in the sixth or seventh to finish off UTA ... he ended the night with eight strikeouts and only three walks while facing 29 batters ... New Mexico State hosts San Jose State for a three-game WAC series this week in Las Cruces.

Sacramento State (26-18, 10-8 WAC)
Sacramento State went 4-1 on the week ... the Hornets won a pair of non-conference games over Saint Mary’s by a score of 3-0 before defeating San Francisco 7-2 ... the Hornets then went 2-1 in a three-game series at home against Louisiana Tech ... Sacramento State dropped the first game 5-4 before winning the next two games by scores of 1-0 and 4-1 ... in the five games during the week, Sacramento State pitchers combined for a 1.60 ERA and help the opposition to a .217 average ... Brennan Leitao earned the victory on Saturday after throwing seven scoreless innings ... the Hornets had five home runs during the week, including a pair from Justin Higley and Andrew Ayers…Sacramento State committed just one error in 191 chances ... Sacramento State plays at Nevada on Tuesday before traveling to Seattle U for a three-game series.

San Jose State (14-29, 8-10 WAC)
San Jose State went 1-3 last week ... the team opened the week with a 17-2 loss at No. 14 Stanford ... the Spartans then dropped two of three games at home to WAC opponent Seattle U ... the Spartans lost game one 13-3, won game two 7-1 and lost in the finale 6-3 ... Sheldon Daquioag hit .538 at the plate with two runs, seven hits, two doubles and a pair of RBI ... Jacob Valdez hit .467 with seven hits, two runs, one double, one RBI and a walk ... Andre Mercurio hit .375 with six hits, two runs scored and two RBI ... D.J. Slaton picked up a win on the mound after working 7.0 innings with four strikeouts ... Slaton gave up only one run ... San Jose State continues play this week at San Francisco on Tuesday before traveling to New Mexico State for a three-game series.

Seattle U (17-25, 7-10 WAC)
Seattle University went 2-2 during the most recent week, starting with a hard-fought 14-inning affair against #6 Oregon State that ended with the Beavers pulling out a 4-3 win ... SU went to San Jose State and won a weekend series over the Spartans for the second consecutive season ... Friday, the Redhawks scored five runs in the second, three runs in the third, and five runs in the eighth inning to bring about the 10-run rule ... Nick Latta went 3-for-4 with three runs scored ... after losing Saturday’s game, 7-1, Seattle U rebounded for a 6-3 victory Sunday ... Andrew Olson went 6 2/3 innings, giving up only one unearned run, and Eric Yardley picked up his ninth save of the season ... offensively, Cullen Hendrickson came off the bench and went 2-for-3 with two RBI ... Seattle U hosts Oregon twice before a key three-game WAC series against Sacramento State.

UT Arlington (24-20, 12-6 WAC)
UT Arlington was 3-2 last week after winning a WAC series over New Mexico State and claiming a victory against UALR ... UTA dropped its Tuesday game at Sam Houston State ... this week, the Mavs begin a seven-game home stand that begins on Tuesday against the Baylor Bears of the Big 12. UTA then hosts metroplex rival Dallas Baptist beginning on Friday ... Matt Shortall improved his batting average to .375 after a week in which he hit safely in all five of UTA’s games ... Shortall hit safely in all five of UTA’s games last week, including four multi-hit games during the stretch of four-of-five on the road ... he hit .478 (11-23) with four doubles and a home run with a .783 slugging percentage and a .500 on base percentage ... the Mavs have six hitters over .300 ... UTA host Baylor on Tuesday ... the team then hosts Dallas Baptist in a three-game series.

Texas State (20-23, 11-7 WAC)
Texas State started the week strong with a midweek win over Texas A&M and finished strong  by taking the series from Western Athletic Conference leader, CSU Bakersfield ... the Bobcats dropped Friday’s game, but rebounded to win Saturday and Sunday in convincing fashion to pull within one game of the lead in the WAC ... both Kevin Sah and Hunter Lemke moved up the Texas State record books in steals and saves while Andrew Stumph hit his first home run of the season, the 14th of his career ... Texas State will start this week against Houston Baptist on Tuesday then travel to UTSA for another conference series.  

UTSA (24-19, 8-9 WAC)
UTSA posted a 3-1 record last week ... the Roadrunners started the week with a 2-1 win at Texas-Pan American last Tuesday ... the Birds then posted bookend wins to claim the league series at Dallas Baptist last weekend ... UTSA received a strong performance from its bullpen last week ... the Roadrunners’ bullpen allowed only two runs in 22.1 innings of work ... the two runs came in the final inning of Sunday’s 7-2 win against the Patriots ... UTSA’s bullpen was 2-0 with a save and a 0.81 ERA during the week ... overall, the Birds’ pitching staff posted a 2.77 ERA and limited its two opponents to a .232 batting average  ... Michael Kraft logged a 2-0 mark in 9.2 scoreless frames, while Matt Sims was 1-0 with a save and did not allow a run in 6.1 stanzas ... three days earlier, Jesse Baker hammered a two-run homer in the top of the second inning that stood up to give the Birds a one-run win against the Broncs.
