WAC Softball Hitter, Pitcher of the Week Announced

DENVER – New Mexico State’s Staci Rodriguez and UT Arlington’s Teri Lyles have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 22-28.  This is the third honor of the season and of her career for Rodriguez and the third of the season for Lyles.

Rodriguez, a sophomore outfielder from Paramount, Calif., led New Mexico State to a 3-0 record against Seattle U last week to remain atop the WAC standings. She posted a .750 batting average, a .800 on-base percentage and an astounding 2.000 slugging percentage with a double, three home runs and eight RBI over the three games. In Friday night’s series opener, she was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. In the come-from-behind win over the Redhawks in the series finale, Rodriguez hit two three-run home runs. With 20 bombs this season, Rodriguez ranks second at New Mexico State and seventh in the WAC in single-season home runs. With the eight RBI last week, she is now tied for second place at NM State and tied for 10th in the WAC in single-season RBI with 62.

Lyles, a senior from Keller, Texas, went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 11 strikeouts and a pair of shutouts last week, limiting opponents to a .141 batting average. She opened the week with a win in relief against North Texas, scattering two hits over four innings. She then picked up the complete-game win in an eight-inning victory over Utah State, striking out four. In the series finale, Lyles threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out six. The righthander leads now the WAC with a 1.49 ERA this season.
 
Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Louisiana Tech’s Erin Kipp hit .500 with one RBI ... Jessie Hufstetler of San Jose State hit .600 with a double and one RBI on the week ... UT Arlington’s Kallan Thompson hit .417 with one RBI and one stolen base ... Courtney Harris of Texas State hit .500 with three doubles and seven RBI.

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Michelle Jones of Louisiana Tech went 1-0 with a 0.88 ERA ... New Mexico State’s Alex Newman went 3-0 with a 0.47 ERA and six strikeouts ... Amanda Pridmore of San Jose State went 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA ... UTSA’s Haylee Staton went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 14 strikeouts ... Rayn House of Texas State went 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA ... Utah State’s Mandy Harmon posted a 0.40 ERA and seven strikeouts last week.
