WAC Menís Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Louisiana Tech’s Yusuf Muhammad and Idaho’s Kyle Rothwell were named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 15-21.
Muhammad, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz. (New Mexico), ran the fourth-fastest 400m hurdles time in Louisiana Tech history last weekend at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge, La. His time of 50.90 is the best time in the WAC by over a half-second and ranks No. 2 in the NCAA East Preliminary qualifying list and No. 10 in the nation.
Rothwell, a junior from Eagle, Idaho (Eagle H.S.), opened the weekend with a second-place heave of 62.43m (204-10) in the men’s hammer throw Friday at the Mt. SAC relays. He then went on to post a season-best mark in the shot put Saturday with a toss of 15.22m (49-11.25). Rothwell improved his Idaho all-time top-10 entry from 10th to fifth with his hammer throw mark. His career-best hammer throw performance improves his four-week WAC leading mark, ranks 15th in the NCAA West and 30th in the NCAA so far this season. Rothwell also threw a distance of 44.92m (49-11.25) in the shot put.
Other track nominees included: Idaho sophomore Ben Ayesu-Attah, Seattle U redshirt senior Matthew McClement, UT Arlington sophomore Emil Blomberg, UTSA freshman Jonas Gutierrez and Utah State freshman Briton Page.
