WAC NOTES

NEW MEXICO STATE’S RUST NAMED WAC HITTER OF THE WEEK
New Mexico State catcher Tanner Rust has been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for April 15-21.

Rust, a junior from Lakeside, Calif. (El Capitan HS), led the Aggies to a 4-1 record last week that included a four-game sweep over WAC foe Louisiana Tech on the road. Rust hit .632 (12-for-19). He tallied two home runs, three doubles, eight RBI, a triple and scored eight runs. He slugged 1.211 and had an on-base percentage of .652 on the week. Rust now has a WAC-high 63 hits on the year and a WAC-high 46 runs scored this season. Rust started the week by going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI against in-state rival New Mexico. Rust opened the WAC series at Louisiana Tech going 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBI, a walk and a double as the Aggies won 10-4. He went 1-for-1 in a 6-4 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday but also marked a run and two RBI. The Aggies swept the league series with LA Tech as they won 5-1 with Rust going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. He finished the week going 2-for-4 with a run in a non-conference game on Sunday as the Aggies defeated LA Tech 4-1. Rust is currently on an eight-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 17 straight games. Rust did not commit a single error as the Aggie catcher last week.

SEATTLE U’S OLSON NAMED WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Seattle U left-hander Andrew Olson has been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for April 15-21.

Olson, a junior from Enumclaw, Wash. (Enumclaw HS/Tacoma CC), earned two of Seattle’s three victories over the past week. At Washington on Tuesday, Olson came into the game in relief in the fifth inning with two runs already in, two runners on base and just one out. Olson forced a popout and a groundout to end the Husky threat and keep the Redhawks in the lead. He would finish with two innings on the mound, allowing just two hits as Seattle U pulled away with the 10-4 victory. On Sunday, Olson made the start on the mound against UT Arlington, scattering four hits and one walk as he pitched a complete game shutout in Seattle U’s 5-0 win. He tied his season high with eight strikeouts and retired 14 straight Maverick hitters after allowing a leadoff bunt single in the first inning. It was the first complete game shutout by a Seattle U pitcher since the baseball program returned to varsity competition in 2010. Overall on the week, Olson pitched 11 innings without giving up a single run. He walked just one batter and compiled two wins and nine strikeouts.

WAC TEAMS AND PLAYERS AMONG NATIONAL STATISTICAL LEADERS
As of April 21, Dallas Baptist leads the nation in home runs per game at 1.10. The Patriots rank third nationally with 44 home runs. New Mexico State ranks fith in the nation with 40 home runs. Dallas Baptist also ranks seventh in the nation in slugging percentage at .470. New Mexico State leads the nation with 242 walks. Individually, Dallas Baptist’s Duncan McAlpine ranks fifth in the nation in home runs with 12. CSU Bakersfield’s Jeff McKenzie ranks second in the nation in wins with nine.

CSU BAKERSFIELD’S SHRYOCK SELECTED TO BROOKS WALLACE WATCH LIST
Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) has been selected to the first Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas. Shyrock is the lone Western Athletic Conference representative and is 1-of-25 members of the first Brooks Wallace Award Watch List.

CSU BAKERSFIELD RECEIVING VOTES IN TWO NATIONAL POLLS
CSU Bakersfield is currently receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top-30 poll and the USA Today Coaches’ Top-25 Poll.

CSU BAKERSFIELD’S MCKENZIE NAMED TO NATIONAL PITCHER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST
Roadrunner ace Jeff McKenzie was selected to the inital watch list for the 2013 Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond Sports and presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions Apr. 13. McKenzie, who is the lone WAC representative on the list which features 41 players from across the country. The award will be given on June 29.


WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

CSU Bakersfield (27-14, 11-4 WAC)
CSU Bakersfield went 3-1 last week with an 8-5 non-conference win at Fresno State and two wins out of three games at home against Dallas Baptist ... the Roadrunners defeated the Patriots by scores of 10-4 and 10-4 before losing the finale 7-3 ... Oscar Sanay hit .529 as CSU Bakersfield over the four games ... Sanay opened the week by going 4-for-4 with three runs scored as CSUB defeated San Joaquin Valley rival Fresno State 8-5 Wednesday night ... Sanay was hit by a pitch for the 13th time this season against Fresno State ... Sanay had two hits against Dallas Baptist in games one and two during the weekend series ... Sanay posted a .647 slugging percentage and a .579 on-base percentage for the week ... Sanay has reached based in 21 consecutive games  ... CSUB continues play this week against Fresno State on Tuesday before traveling to Texas State for a three-game WAC series.

Dallas Baptist (21-19, 8-7 WAC)
Dallas Baptist went 1-3 last week ... the team dropped an 8-3 decision at home against Stephen F. Austin before going 1-2 at CSU Bakersfield ... the Patriots dropped games one and two by the same score, 10-4 ... DBU then rallied to win game three of the series 7-3 ... Chane Lynch had six hits in three starts on the week – four of which went for extra bases … the junior collected a 1.364 slugging percentage to go along with a .545 on base percentage … is triple in the second inning helped the Patriots to a four run inning on Sunday at CSU-Bakersfield en route to a 7-3 win … Dallas Baptist continues play this week at home against Baylor before welcoming UTSA for a three-game conference series.

Louisiana Tech (13-28, 2-13 WAC)
Louisiana Tech went 1-4 last week ... the team opened play last week with a 3-1 win over Northwestern State on the road ... the Bulldogs then dropped four-straight games at home against New Mexico State by scores of 10-4, 6-4, 5-1 and 4-1 ... Tyler Ervine led the team at the plate over the five games, batting .385 with five hits, one double, two RBI and one hit by pitch ... Ryan Jones hit .357 at the plate on the week with five hits, one run and a pair of walks. Bre’shon Kimbell hit .353 with six hits, two runs, one double, an RBI and two walks ... Trevor Petersen pitched 6.1 innings on the week, giving up only two earned runs, two walks and seven hits ... he also struck out two ... Louisiana Tech looks to get back on track this week as the team plays a non-conference game at Grambling State on Tuesday before traveling to play Sacramento State in a three-game WAC series.

New Mexico State (23-18, 8-7 WAC)
The Aggies went 4-1 last week as they lost to their in-state rival New Mexico before sweeping a four-game series at Louisiana Tech ... NM State heads into the week sitting in a tie for fourth with Sacramento State at 8-7 in league play ... the Aggies lead the league in on-base percentage, runs scored and RBIs ... junior Tanner Rust tallied a .632 batting average in five games last week, going 12-for-19 with half of those hits extra base hits ... Rust marked three doubles, a triple and two home runs, scoring eight times and marking eight RBIs ...  ... senior Adam Mott was just one strikeout short of his season-high marking seven against Louisiana Tech in the WAC series opener ... Mott worked 7.0 innings, striking out seven batters, walking two, allowing just one run as he faced 30 batters ... NM State plays at Texas Tech on Tuesday before a three-game series at home against UT Arlington.

Sacramento State (22-17, 8-7 WAC)
Sacramento State went 1-2 last week in a three-game series at UTSA ... the Hornets dropped game one 7-2 before winning game two 12-1 ... Sacramento State then dropped the series finale 8-5 ... senior Will Soto hit for the cycle over the weekend ... the Hornets had three triples at UTSA, including a pair from Soto ... Justin Higley hit his sixth and seventh home runs which leads the team ... Nathan Lukes collected all seven of his hits over the final two games of the UTSA series ... Lukes went 4-for-5 in Saturday’s 12-1 victory and was 3-for-4 on Sunday ... Brennan Leitao allowed hits to the first two batters he faced on Saturday but surrendered just one hit over the rest of our his outing ... he threw seven innings, allowing only one run with two walks and three K’s ... Sacramento State will play its second five-game week this season when it faces Saint Mary’s and USF before hosting Louisiana Tech.

San Jose State (13-26, 7-8 WAC)
San Jose State went 2-1 last week in a three-game series at home against Texas State ... the Spartans won the first two games by scores of 11-5 and 5-4 ... San Jose State then dropped the series finale to the Bobcats 11-5 ... Tim Quiery led the Spartan attack at the plate over the week, hitting .545 with six hits, two runs scored and six RBI ... Quiery struck out only once in 11 at bats ... Ricky Acosta hit .500 with four hits, two runs, one double, two RBI and three walks ... Andre Mercurio hit .429 with six hits, five runs scored, one double, two RBI and a walk ... Kyle Hassna pitched 3.0 innings on the week without giving up a run, while striking out three ... D.J. Slaton pitched 6.0 innings with four strikeouts while giving up only two runs ... SJSU continues play this week at home against Stanford on Tuesday before welcoming Seattle U for a three-game series.

Seattle U (15-24, 5-9 WAC)
Seattle U went 3-1 over the past week, starting with a 10-4 victory over crosstown rival Washington Tuesday, the third straight season in which the Redhawks have earned a victory over the Pac-12 Huskies ... after a rainout Friday, Seattle U and UT Arlington split a doubleheader Saturday ... the Redhawks won the first game, 10-3, taking a 4-0 lead before UTA scored three runs in the sixth before senior Evan Ewing notched a key strikeout to end the rally ... SU scored six runs in the seventh, the last three on a home run by Nick Latta, the fourth consecutive game in which he hit a home run ... after losing the nightcap Saturday, 3-1, Seattle U won the series with a 5-0 win Sunday behind a four-hit complete game shutout from Andrew Olson, the first complete game shutout for a Seattle U pitcher in the new incarnation of the Redhawk program ... SU  now plays a weekend WAC series at San Jose State April 26-28.

UT Arlington (21-18, 10-5 WAC)
UT Arlington went 1-3 last week with losses to TCU and a pair to Seattle U on the weekend … Zach Thompson picked up his fifth win of the season on his second shutout ... Thompson gave up just one earned run in his nine innings pitched and struck out one ... the sophomore pitched masterfully despite weather conditions that had delayed UTA’s game on Friday to push the teams into a doubleheader on Saturday ... despite going 1-2 on the weekend, the Mavericks lone win came behind Thompson’s arm ... the Mavericks will look to rebound in a week in which it will play five games in six days. UTA travels to Huntsville, Texas to face former Southland Conference Sam Houston State … the Mavs host Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday afternoon and then travel to New Mexico State to resume WAC play.

Texas State (17-22, 9-6 WAC)
Texas State went 2-2 last week ... the team opened the week with a 3-0 shutout over Baylor ... the team then went 1-2 at San Jose State ... the Bobcats lost the first two games to the Spartans by scores of 11-5 and 5-4 ... Texas State won the series finale 11-5 ... Cody Lovejoy led the Bobcats at the plate over the four games, hitting .588 with 10 hits, four runs scored, one double, one home run, four RBI and two walks ...Kevin Sah hit .429 with six hits, eight runs scored, two RBI, four walks and six stolen bases ... Andrew Stumph hit .412 with seven hits, one run, three RBI and two walks ... Mitchell Pitts pitched 7.0 innings in two appearances, picking up two wins ... Pitts did not allow a run and only gave up three hits with an impressive six strikeouts ... Texas State continues play this week on Tuesday at home against Texas A&M before starting a three-game series against CSU Bakersfield.

UTSA (21-18, 6-8 WAC)
UTSA posted a 2-2 record last week ... the Roadrunners were shut out at Lamar last Wednesday, but rebounded to take two of three from visiting Sacramento State last weekend ... Daniel Rockett hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to help UTSA clinch the series with the Hornets on Sunday ... Riley Good paced the Birds with a .462 batting average (6-for-13) with two doubles and a pair of RBIs ... Horacio Correa III, who hit .357 (5-for-14) with a double and two RBIs, extended his hitting streak to a career-long 13 games against Sacramento State on Sunday ... reliever Matt Sims picked up the win against the Hornets on Sunday and UTSA’s bullpen improved to 14-3 on the season ... the Roadrunners improved to 17-6 at home this season.
