THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
This weekend becomes quite hectic for the Vandal track and field team as most of the team travels to California for several different meets, and another squad stays on the Palouse for the Cougar Invitational at Washington State ... many of the team’s athletes will compete in multiple events over a three-day period at Mt. SAC Relays, the Long Beach Invitational, and the California Invitational Multi-Events ... this weekend marks the final big road trip of the regular season ... despite the harsh weather conditions, the Vandal track and field teams went on to claim eight individual events and posted personal best marks at the War VI Regional Dual.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
Louisiana Tech’s track and field program registered 15 finishes in the top three with four event winners at the Stephen F. Austin Invitational ... high jumper Pamela Lee tied a personal record with a mark of 5-8.75 (1.75m) as she won the women’s high jump competition ... her mark ranks second in school history and less than two inches off the top mark ... Niko Richey ran a pair of personal best times as he placed third in the 100m with a time of 10.59 and ran 21.05 in the 200m to finish second ... Paul Sakit notched a pair of third-place finishes as he ran a personal record 1:53.76 in the 800m and ran 3:53.96 in the 1,500m ... LA Tech will resume action at the Southeastern Invite this Friday.
New Mexico State Aggies
The New Mexico State University track and field team will be competing in two different meets this weekend with Mt. Sac Relays, at Walnut Calif., and the Michael Johnson Classic at Waco, Texas ... Courtney and Camille Schultz will be competing at the Mt. Sac Relays where they will be competing in 10,000m ... the rest of the team will be traveling to the Michael Johnson Classic to compete in a variety of short distance, middle distance, long distance, hurdles, relays and field events ... the Aggies are coming off the weekend where they competed at the UTEP Invitational where the team finished with great results in a variety of events, including the relays.
Seattle University Redhawks
Sophie Curatilo broke an eight-year-old school record in winning the women’s 5000 meter run, one of four event victories for the Seattle University track and field team as the Redhawks helped the collection of Washington schools defeat the squad of schools from Oregon, Idaho, and Montana at WAR VI ... the other event victories came from the Seattle University men ... Zach Stanfield won the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.95 seconds ... he also was part of two victorious relays, joining with Zachary Schlachter, Shaddye Melu and Austin Thummel-Gravitt to win the 4x100 meter relay in 41.62 seconds and the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:20.49 ... Seattle University track and field team will compete at one of three meets next Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19 (Mt. SAC Relays, Oregon Days and Bryan Clay Invite).
University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks
The UT Arlington men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to head to California this week, with a trip to the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays highlighting the itinerary ... the Mavericks had a total of 28 individuals qualify for the Mt. SAC Relays, which are held in Walnut, Calif., at historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium ... a total of eight Mavs are scheduled to participate in multiple individual events at Mt. SAC ... UTA also will have a select group of competitors at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State ... that meet will tak place Friday and Saturday.
Roscoe Robinson was victorious in the long jump for the second consecutive meet at Saturday’s Texas Invitational with a wind-aided leap of 7.74m (25-4.75) … he continues to lead the WAC standings and ranks fifth on the national leaderboard (7.85m/25-9.25) … Joshua Smith recorded a conference-leading 51.44 in a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles and he moved into 18th in the NCAA standings ... Ernestine Cray was named WAC Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday after winning the triple jump for the second time to open her season at last Saturday’s Texas Invitational ... she skipped to a career-long and WAC-leading distance of 12.87m (42-2.75) and now ranks 15th nationally ... … the Roadrunners will be back in action at Saturday’s Longhorns Invitational in Austin.
Texas State Bobcats
Texas State topped three events at the Texas Invitational in Austin Saturday ... the women won two running events while the men took home the pole vault ... Texas State’s most impressive performance of the day came from senior stalwart Logan Cunningham ... he won the pole vault with his highest jump of the season so far, a vault of 5.37m (17-7.25) ... the jump is tops in the WAC and puts him 15th in the nation ... Dasha Tsema claimed third at the Texas Invitational with a new WAC-leading throw in the women’s discus ... Chante’sean White continued to make a good showing in the 400m hurdles with a first-place time of 58.53 ... next up for TX State is the LSU Alumni Gold in Batton Rouge, La.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State’s men and women’s track & field teams will host the annual USU Mark Faldmo Invitational at Ralph Maughan Track Stadium in Logan, Utah on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 ... a select number of Aggies will also travel to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays, Distance Carnival and Invitational on Thursday through Saturday, April 18-20 ... USU will welcome in-state schools BYU, Utah (women), Utah Valley, Weber State (women), and Westminster (women), along with border foe Idaho State in the annual track & field meet.
The 2013 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships travels to Arlington, Texas. This year’s championships will be hosted UT Arlington and will take place at Maverick Stadium beginning Mar. 8 and running through Mar. 11. The Idaho men and Utah State women claimed the championships last year.
