WAC NOTES

NEW MEXICO STATE’S LECOUNT NAMED WAC HITTER OF THE WEEK
New Mexico State third baseman Robert Lecount was named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for April 1-7.

Lecount, a senior from Shoreline, Wash. (Shorewood HS), led the Aggies to three wins last week including a 10-5 win over in-state rival New Mexico and two wins over Dallas Baptist. Lecount hit .462 (6-for-13). He tallied six walks, nine RBI, two home runs, a double, a triple and scored six runs. His extra base hits equated to a 1.154 slugging percentage on the week, while his six walks helped him tally a .650 on-base percentage for the four games. Lecount reached safely at least once in every game last week and extended his hitting streak to five games. He tallied a solo home run against UNM in a midweek game, before he opened the WAC series against DBU going 2-for-3 with a season-high five RBIs in a 16-5 seven-inning win. He tallied his second consecutive 2-for-3 day against the Patriots as he led NM State to a 7-5 victory in game two to clinch the series. That day he also had a double, a walk and a run scored.  He finished the week going 1-for-2 with three walks as the Aggies fell short on a comeback attempt losing 12-10 in 10 innings.

SACRAMENTO STATE’S MCLOUGHLIN NAMED WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Sacramento State right-hander Sutter McLoughlin was named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for April 1-7.

McLoughlin, a freshman from Sacramento, Calif. (Rio Americano HS), converted all four of his save opportunities during the week, including all three in a sweep over Texas State. The true freshman wrapped up the series against the Bobcats by entering the game with runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice, he intentionally walked a hitter before forcing a double play. McLoughlin now has eight saves on the season which is tied for third in school single-season history. On the week, McLoughlin pitched 4.0 innings in four appearances. He collected four saves in four opportunities and recorded one strikeout. He gave up only one hit and did not allow an earned run.

WAC TOURNAMENT HEADS TO GRAND PRAIRIE’S QUIKTRIP PARK
After succesful tournaments in Mesa, Ariz., the past three years, the WAC baseball tournament will now head to Grand Prairie, Texas this May. The event will be played at QuikTrip Park, home of the Grand Prairie Air Hogs. The Air Hogs play in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. The cities of Grand Prairie and Arlington will host the tournament with the winner earning the WAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams from the WAC’s regular season standings will advance to the tournament.  The brand-new QuikTrip Park at Grand Prairie located in the heart of Grand Prairie’s Entertainment District directly between Lone Star Park and Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX. The $25 million venue, seats 5,500 guests and features 13 luxury suites. Amenities at the stadium include: The AirHogs Pool and Party Deck, the 17,000 sq. ft. Grand Prairie Wide World of Parks Playground, the FieldHouse Grill & Bar, the 3rd Base Party Deck, the Coors Light Officers Club and the Admirals Club. QuikTrip Park hosts special events such as live boxing, concerts, car shows, festivals and corporate events.

WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

CSU Bakersfield (21-12, 6-3 WAC)
CSU Bakersfield went 2-2 last week ... the team dropped a non-conference contest at Cal State Northridge 2-1 before taking two of three games from UT Arlington ... Mylz Jones had his school record 21-game hitting streak ended Apr. 6 at UT-Arlington ... Jones’ streak was the fourth longest in Division I this season ... Cael Brockmeyer hit .615 with four RBI’s during the week ... Brockmeyer caught and played first during the week and did not committ an error in 30 chances on the week ... Jeff McKenzie improved to 7-1 on the year with a victory over UT Arlington Apr. 5 ... McKenzie gave up two earned runs in seven ininings, doubling the total he gave up over the previous 35.2 ... CSUB opened this week with a 5-2 loss to No. 20 Cal Poly ... the team now hosts Cal State Northridge on Wednesday before welcoming UTSA for a three-game league series this week.

Dallas Baptist (18-15, 5-4 WAC)
Dallas Baptist went 1-3 last week ... the team dropped a 6-1 decision at Baylor before losing two of three games at New Mexico State ... Austin Listi hit .438 in four games this week, including a midweek against Baylor, and made only a single error in the infield … Listi hit three homeruns and drove in seven runs while slugging 1.063 in the four games … Aaron Gilbreath saw action in two games this week, but it was his efforts in Sunday’s finale that cemented his role in the DBU bullpen … Gilbreath entered Sunday’s tie game in the bottom of the ninth and, with the bases loaded, struck out three straight batters to send the game to extra innings … in the tenth, and now pitching with a two run lead, Gilbreath struck out two and induced a game-ending groundout ... DBU picked up a 10-9 win at home over Texas Tech on Tuesday to open this week ... the team now hosts Seattle U in a three-game WAC series this week.

Louisiana Tech (12-21, 2-7 WAC)
The Bulldogs made their final road trip to San Jose, Calif. to face WAC foe San Jose State for the final time in regular season play ... Tech was hot out of the gates and took the first game of the series 6-2 behind a complete game performance by sophomore right hander Phil Maton ... the Bulldogs’ bats came alive as well in the first game as Tech hitters recorded 14 hits on the day with five of those batters recording multiple hits in the win ... the Spartans took the second game of the weekend Saturday to tie the series at 1-1 as the San Jose State pitching staff held the Bulldogs to just one run and defeated Tech 7-1 ... Sunday’s rubber match proved to be a back-and-forth contest with San Jose State prevailing by a score of 12-8 over the Bulldogs thanks to a late-inning home run by the Spartans ... Tech travels to play Texas State in a three-game WAC series this week.

New Mexico State (18-15, 4-5 WAC)
The Aggies are currently sitting in the No. 8 spot of the WAC standings at 4-5, just two games behind the leaders ... NM State is 18-15 on the season and hitting .290 on the year, which is fourth best in the league ... the Aggies do lead the league in on-base percentage, runs scored and RBIs, however ... NM State went 3-1 last week defeating in-state rival UNM before taking the series against DBU, 2-1 ... senior Bobby Lecount was named WAC Hitter of the Week after leading the Aggies to three wins last week including a 10-5 win over in-state rival New Mexico and two wins over Dallas Baptist ... Lecount posted a .462 batting average on the week, which included a double, a triple and two home runs ... senior Casey Collins pitched the most innings of any Aggie pitcher last week working 10.1 innings while finishing the week with a 2-0 record ... NMSU hosts Sacramento State this week for three games.

Sacramento State (19-14, 5-4 WAC)
Sacramento State swept Texas State in the first meetings between the two schools ... the Hornets have now won five of their last six games…the team has added a midweek game against Simpson on Tuesday ... freshman Nathan Lukes matched Lewis during the week hitting .526 (10-19) with a double, triple and five runs scored ... Brennan Leitao did not allow a hit through the first 6.2 innings against Texas State on Sunday and finished allowing only three hits in 8+ innings ... Chris Lewis was hit safely in all five games last week and finished 10-for-19 with four runs scored and five RBI ... he also tripled during the week ... against Texas State, Lewis was 7-for-12 (.583) including a 4-for-4 performance on Saturday. He also drove in three runs and struck out only once ... the redshirt freshman extended his reached base safely streak to 23 games and his hit streak to nine games.

San Jose State (11-22, 5-4 WAC)
San Jose State went 2-2 last week ... the team dropped a 9-8 decision at Saint Mary’s to open the week ... the Spartans then dropped a 6-2 decision at home to Louisiana Tech in the three-game series opener ... SJSU rebounded to win the next two games against Louisiana Tech by scores of 7-1 and 12-8 to claim the series ... Tim Quiery led the Spartans at the plate, hitting .600 with six hits, three runs and an RBI ... Matt Carroll hit .471 with eight hits, five runs, three doubles and four RBI ... Nick Schulz led the Spartans with six RBI on the week ... D.J. Slaton picked up a win on the mound after working 5.0 innings with two strikeouts ... Slaton gave up only one run in his victory ... San Jose State returns to action on Friday when the team travels to play UT Arlington in a three-game WAC series ... the Spartans opened this week on Tuesday with a 10-8 loss to Stanford.

Seattle U (11-20, 2-6 WAC)
Seattle University went 0-4 over the past week, first losing non-conference games to Washington (14-1) and Portland (13-6) ... the Redhawks welcomed UTSA to Bannerwood Park for a weekend series, with the start times of the Friday and Saturday games being moved up to try and avoid significant weather ... it did rain both days, but the first two games of the series were completed, with UTSA winning both of them, 8-1 and 8-4 ... the Sunday game was cancelled due to continuing rain, with no plans to reschedule the contest ... Grant Newton’s nine-game hitting streak was snapped against Washington, but he has reached base safely in 19 straight games, and he has at least one base hit in 12 of his last 13 contests  ... SU defeated NAIA school British Columbia 5-2 Tuesday and now heads out on the road for a three-game series at Dallas Baptist Thursday through Saturday.

UT Arlington (16-15, 6-3 WAC)
The Mavericks went 1-2 last week after its midweek series against Oklahoma Christian University was cancelled due to rain ... UTA returned to the field against CSU Bakersfield and dropped the opening and closing games of the series ... Matt Shortall had a pair of hits in each of UTA’s three games against CSU Bakersfield over the weekend … he finished with four RBI, including the game winning hit in the ninth hitting of UTA’s 3-2 come from behind victory over the Roadrunners … Shortall sent the first pitch he saw with one out in the ninth to left-center field to score the runners from first and second ... this week, UTA dropped a 14-4 decision to Baylor on Tuesday to start the week ... the Mavericks conclude the weekend with a game against Arlington Baptist on Thursday at Quik Trip Park and a WAC series against San Jose State at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Texas State (12-20, 5-4 WAC)
Texas State went 0-4 last week ... the team opened the week with a 4-3 loss at No. 18 Rice ... the Bobcats then dropped a three-game series at Sacramento State by scores of 3-2, 7-5 and 1-0 ... Morgan Mickan led the Bobcats at the plate over the four games, hitting .417 with five hits, one run scored, two doubles, four walks and an RBI ... Mickan also had three stolen bases on the week ... Garrett Mattlage hit .250 with four hits, one double, four RBI and a pair of walks ... Austen Williams had a pair of impressive performances on the mound for the Bobcats last week, pitching 5.1 innings without giving up a run ... Williams gave up just two hits and only walks one ... he also picked up a pair of strikeouts ... Donnie Hart did not give up a run in 4.1 innings on the mound last week ... Hart gave up only two hits and struck out three ... the Bobcats dropped a 12-5 decision to Texas on Tuesday ... the team hosts LA Tech for three games, starting Friday.

UTSA (19-13, 4-4 WAC)
UTSA posted a 2-1 record last week ... the Roadrunners had a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning at No. 18 Texas A&M before a three hour and 12 minute rain delay interrupted the contest ... following the delay, the Aggies outscored UTSA 11-1 and went on to collect an 11-4 victory ... the Birds responded by winning two straight in a rain-shortened league series at Seattle last weekend ... UTSA continued its offensive onslaught last week ... the Roadrunners posted a .322 batting average with six doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs … sophomore John Bormann continued his outstanding year behind the plate, as he picked off his nation-leading 12th runner of the season and he threw out his 18th potential base stealer (in 29 attempts/62%) ... RJ Perucki led UTSA’s potent offense last week with a .500 batting average (6-for-12), which included two doubles and his team-leading eighth homer of the season.
