The University of Denver Men’s Tennis Team defeated New Mexico State 5-2 on Sunday in Las Cruces, N.M. ... the win is the Pioneers third straight and puts them at 6-11 overall and 2-0 in the WAC ... in singles, No. 67 Enej Bonin defeated New Mexico State’s Luis Ramirez 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in No. 1 singles play ... Max Krammer returned to the No. 3 singles spot and defeated Marc Westgate, 6-3, 6-2 ... the Pioneers defeated Seattle U, 5-1, at the Gates Tennis Center on Friday ... Alex Clinkenbeard topped Jason Bediones 6-1, 6-1 to help the Pioneers claim the dual.
The Vandals picked up their 20th win of the season and improved to 4-0 in WAC play with wins over UT Arlington, and Sacramento State during the week ... Idaho’s only loss was a 4-3 defeat at Oklahoma State ... Idaho is 20-4 on the season.NEW MEXICO STATE (11-8, 1-2)
The New Mexico State men’s tennis team was knocked off 5-2 by Western Athletic Conference foe Denver on Sunday afternoon ... NM State fell behind 0-1 early with Denver claiming the pivotal doubles point with wins at the first and second courts ... Daniel Fernandez and Naveen Manivannan were able to come up with a win at the third position 8-4 to help NM State avoid the sweep in doubles ... Fernandez used three sets to pick up the win (6-0, 1-6, 7-6) at the No. 2 singles court ... the Aggies head to Logan, Utah, to face Seattle U on Friday, April 12, and then wrap the weekend on Saturday, April 13 against host Utah State.
Flavio Malagutti has the best singles record on the team, going 4-4 in individual competition ... out of players who have played 10 or more matches, Will Topp has gone 4-6 and Zach Kosanke is 6-12 ... in doubles play, Topp has the best record, going 3-5 ... out of players who’ve played more than 10 matches, Jason Bediones has a 5-9 record, with four of those wins coming with Kevin Lynch ... the Redhawks will play three matches this week, starting out in Logan, Utah for a WAC match against Utah State April 11 ... they’ll take on another conference foe in New Mexico State April 12, again in Logan, and then finish up with a match at Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho April 14.
The men’s tennis teams head to Dallas to take on SMU on Wednesday ... they begin play at 3:00 p.m. CT ... the men are coming off their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season and hope to use that momentum to pick up a victory.
UTSA posted a 4-0 victory against Utah State on Friday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center ... the Roadrunners swept all three doubles tilts and then picked up three wins in singles competition to clinch the contest ... Martin Ayala and Diogo Casa notched an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles to improve to 14-3 this spring ... Casa, Joel Rubio and David Kelleher all netted victories in singles action to finish off the shutout against the Aggies ... UTSA will return to action on Sunday, April 14, when it hosts Denver.
Utah State men’s tennis fell to Western Athletic Conference rival UTSA, 4-0 ... both teams agreed to stop at four points and leave the other matches unfinished ... Fredrik Peterson fell to Diogo Casa at the No. 2 spot in straight sets (6-2, 6-4), and sophomore Matt Sweet was defeated by Joel Rubio at the No. 3 spot in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) ... the Aggies will now return to Logan to host WAC rivals Seattle on Thursday, Apr. 11 at 12 p.m., UT Arlington on Friday Apr. 12 at 12 p.m. and New Mexico State on Saturday Apr. 13 at 10 a.m.
