WAC Softball Hitter, Pitcher of the Week Announced

DENVER – San Jose State’s Michelle Cox and New Mexico State’s Alex Newman have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 1-7. This is the first-ever honor for Cox and the first of the season and second of her career for Newman.

Cox, a sophomore outfielder from Sydney, Australia, led San Jose State to a 3-1 record last week. She hit .615 with a double, a home run, three RBI and three stolen bases. She posted a .667 on-base percentage and a .923 slugging percentage. Cox, who got a hit in all four games, opened the week with a hit, two walks and two stolen bases in a shutout win over Santa Clara. In the series opener against Seattle U, she hit her first career homer to account for the Spartans’ scoring in a 2-1 loss. On Saturday, Cox went 3-for-4 with one RBI in both games.

Newman, a senior from Rio Linda, Calif., went 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA last week as the Aggies moved into first place in the WAC standings with a series sweep of UT Arlington. She opened the week with a complete-game victory, allowing one unearned run on three hits. Newman then threw eight innings of relief in a 12-inning victory over the Mavericks in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, striking out six. In the series finale, she entered in the sixth inning and threw 2.2 innings in an eight-inning 6-5 Aggie victory.
 
Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Louisiana Tech’s Amanda Krueger hit .444 with three RBI and two stolen bases ... Amber Olive of New Mexico State hit .538 with one triple, one homer and two RBI ... Seattle U’s Bubba Morrow hit .455 with a double, a homer and four RBI ... Nina Villanueva of UT Arlington hit .600 with three doubles and three RBI last week ... UTSA’s Darian Blake hit .500 with a triple and one RBI ... Brooke Baker of Texas State hit .556 with a double and one RBI on the week ... Utah State’s Christine Thomsen hit .500 with a double, a homer run and three RBI on the week.

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: San Jose State’s Amanda Pridmore went 2-1 with a save and 21 strikeouts on the week ... Teri Lyles of UT Arlington posted seven strikeouts last week ... Texas State’s Ashley Wright went 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA last week ... Mandy Harmon of Utah State went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and nine strikeouts in two appearances.
