WAC Gymnastics Teams to Compete at NCAA Regionals Saturday

Boise State claimed the 2013 WAC Gymnastics Championship Saturday night in Cedar City, Utah. The Broncos finished the meet with 196.225 points, followed by Denver with 196.125 points. Sacramento State was third with 195.500, while Utah State was fourth with 195.100. Southern Utah was fifth with 194.925 and San Jose State was sixth with 194.700.

Individual Champions:
All-Around: Caitlin Mann, Boise State - 39.475
Vault: Kaitlin Moorhead, Denver - 9.950
Uneven Bars: Nina McGee, Denver - 9.925
Balance Beam: Cayla Beutler, Sacramento State, Caitlin Mann, Boise State, Cami Guyer, San Jose State - 9.850

All six of the WAC’s gymnastics teams will be represented at the 2013 NCAA Gymnastics Regional Championships as three teams and numerous individuals have been selected to participate.

2013 WAC championship meet champion Boise State and WAC regular season champion Denver will each compete as a team at the Corvallis and Tuscaloosa regionals. Individuals from Sacramento State, San Jose State and Utah State will compete at the Corvallis and Columbus regionals.

The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Los Angeles. Calif, April 19-21, hosted by UCLA. In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.

With wins over Utah State and Boise State on Feb. 23, Denver clinched its first Western Athletic Conference regular season title, going a perfect 4-0 in conference meets this season. The Pioneers will look to repeat as WAC Postseason champs on March 23 in Cedar City, Utah.


Boise State Broncos (17-3, 2-2 WAC)
Boise State won its fourth WAC gymnastics championship on March 23 in Cedar City, Utah ... BSU swept the postseason WAC honors as Caitlin Mann was named Gymnast of the Year, Maddie Krentz was the WAC Freshman of the Year, and Tina Bird and Neil Resnick were named co-Coaches of the Year ... 21-ranked Boise State will travel to the Corvallis (West) Regional to compete in the NCAA Regionals held on Saturday, April 6, at 4 p.m. (PT) in Oregon State’s Gill Coliseum.

Denver Pioneers (22-3, 4-0 WAC)
Denver placed second at the WAC gymnastics championship in Cedar City ... No. 15 Denver will take part in the Tuscaloosa Regional on Saturday at Coleman Coliseum (15,075) at 5 p.m. MT against host No. 3 Alabama, No.9 Utah, No. 23 Kent State, No. 30 BYU and No. 35 Iowa State ... Kaitlin Moorhead won the vault title (9.950) at the WAC championship meet ... Nina McGee won the bars title with a 9.925, while she also won the floor title with a 9.925.

Sacramento State Hornets (9-14, 2-1 WAC)
Kalliah McCartney, Nicole Meiller and Kailey Hansen were each selected to compete in the NCAA Gymnastics Corvallis Regional on April 6 ... McCartney was the top individual all-arounder selected out of the West Region ... she became the first gymnast in school history to average 39-plus in the all-around ... Meiller will be making her third NCAA appearance and second consecutive on bars ... Hansen will return to the regionals on beam and is the alternate for vault.

San Jose State Spartans (13-16, 2-3 WAC)
San Jose State’s Bekah Gher and Cassandra Harrison will compete in the all-around at the NCAA Corvallis Regional, hosted by Oregon State, on April 6 ... Gher, a second-team All-WAC honoree in the all-around, will compete in the all-around after recording a 38.980 regional qualifying score (RQS) ... a first-team All-WAC honoree on floor, Harrison’s 38.970 RQS in the all-around qualified her for the regional ... Cami Guyer won a share of the beam title at the WAC championship meet.

Southern Utah Thunderbirds (8-12, 3-2 WAC)
Southern Utah University finished fifth at the AAC championships with a 194.925 ... Michaela Chernoch and Brittney Jensen earned first-team all-WAC honors with a 9.875 on floor and 9.925 on vault, respectively ... SUU will travel to Norman, Okla., this weekend for the NCAA Regionals with a chance to advance to the NCAA National Championship on the line ... SUU qualified for the meet after finishing the regular season in the top 36 in the nation at No. 34.

Utah State Aggies  (5-14, 0-5 WAC)
Three Utah State gymnasts have been selected to compete in the NCAA North Central Regional Championships, held on Saturday, April 6 in Columbus, Ohio ... junior Paige Jones and sophomore Sarah Landes will all be competing in the all-around, while freshman Stefanie Daley will compete on beam ... USU ended team competition on Saturday at the WAC championship in Cedar City ... the team had its best outing of the year, notching an overall score of 195.100 and finishing fourth.
