The University of Denver men’s tennis team defeated UC- Santa Barbara, 4-3 ... the Pioneers took the early 1-0 lead after defeating UC-Santa Barbara in two of three doubles matches ... No. 67 Enej Bonin routed UC-Santa Barbara’s Benjamin Recknagel 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1 singles play ... Fabio Biasion defeated Alexander Gryaznov 6-2, 6-1 and Junior Alex Clinkenbeard rolled Andrew Riminton 6-0, 6-2 to help the Pioneers claim the 4-3 victory ... the Pioneers next match is Friday, April 5 against Seattle.IDAHO (19-3, 4-0)
The No. 61 Idaho men’s tennis team suffered a 4-2 loss at the hands of SMU on Sunday but bounced back with a 4-0 win over UT Arlington ... the andals had won seven of their last eight matches before falling to SMU ... Idaho moves to 19-3 on the season and 4-0 in WAC play with the win over UT Arlington ... the Vandals wrap up their road trip at Oklahoma State on Tuesday.
NEW MEXICO STATE (11-7, 1-1)
Finishing the weekend with 2-2, the New Mexico State men’s tennis team topped Eastern Michigan 5-0 on Sunday afternoon ... the Aggies were quick to pick up two wins in doubles play for the first point ... Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate worked their way to a 8-5 win at court one, while Daniel Fernandez and Naveen Manivannan teamed up to win at the third spot 8-3 ... Germain Degardin bounced to a two-set win at the third court to get things started for the Aggies ... Westgate and Paul Denele each worked for Aggie wins at the fourth and fifth court, while Paul Pfister helped NM State to the 5-0 win over the Eagles by claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win at the sixth spot ... NM State heads into its final home dual of the season against WAC foe Denver.SEATTLE U (1-15, 0-1)
Zach Kosanke is the first SU tennis player to win a WAC award ... he was named Player of the Week for the week of March 18-24 after sweeping both his doubles and singles matches against Souther Utah ... Kosanke also leads the squad in dual singles wins with six ... two of those have come at No. 2 singles while four have come at No. 3 ... Jason Bediones has the best doubles record on the team with 5-8 in dual doubles matches ... four of those five wins have come while partnered with Kevin Lynch ... the Redhawks will play their second and third WAC matches this weekend, traveling to Denver and UT Arlington ... they will also face Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., for a non-conference match.
The UT Arlington men’s tennis team was shutout by WAC opponent Idaho 4-0 ... Sebastian Gomez and Javier Perez won their doubles competition at the No. 3 position, but No. 1 and No. 2 doubles lost to give Idaho the 1-0 lead as the teams headed into singles play ... with a 1-0 lead, Idaho needed to win just three matches to win the match and that’s exactly what they did ... Yauheni Yakauleu was the first to go down for the Mavs as he lost 6-2, 6-2 in the No, 1 position ... the Mavericks 6-11 overall and remain winless in the WAC with a 0-3 record.UTSA (10-8, 1-0)
UTSA looks to build upon back-to-back victories when it travels to No. 69 Rice at Wednesday ... first serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium ... the Roadrunners have netted back-to-back wins at UT Arlington and against Louisiana-Lafayette ... the Birds held off the Ragin’ Cajuns for a 4-3 victory on Monday ... Joel Rubio registered the clinching point in singles play for the second consecutive match ... Rubio, Martin Ayala and David Kelleher all have won their last two singles tilts, while Kelleher and Diogo Casa lead UTSA with identical 11-6 marks ... the Roadrunners knocked off Rice in the last meeting between the two program, a 4-3 decision on Feb. 11, 2012, in Houston.
Utah State men’s tennis will hit the road to take on in-state rivals Weber State on Wednesday, April 3 at 11:00 a.m. MT ... this is the second time this season these two teams will compete, the last time ending in a 4-3 win for the Aggies ... leading the Aggies will be senior Sven Poslusny who is currently 8-5 in the No. 1 singles position for the season and sophomore Sean Levesque who was the only Aggie to win a singles match last week putting him at 4-5 for singles play ... the Aggies will next hit the road to take on WAC foe UTSA on Friday April 15 in San Antonio, Texas.
