The University of Denver No. 63 Women’s Tennis team defeated UT- San Antonio Friday in Ruston, La., 7-0 ... the Pioneers claimed two of three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead ... Sophia Bergner and Steffi Rath defeated UTSA’s Isabelle Jonsson and Alena Shichkova 8-4 in No. 1 doubles ... Caroline Schnell and freshman Kathryn Hughes continued to roll in No. 3 doubles, defeating Natalie Hand and Kavya Menon 8-2 ... the Pioneers swept UTSA in singles play, winning all six matches ... Bergner was victorious over Jacobea Junger 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 singles ... Schnell defeated Jonsson 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles ... the Pioneers were scheduled to play Louisiana Tech on Saturday, but the match was canceled due to weather ... the No. 61 Pioneers next match is Friday, April 5 against Texas State in Logan, Utah.
IDAHO (6-8, 0-1)
The Idaho women’s tennis team fell to No. 58 Denver, 6-1 ... Idaho drops to 6-8 and 0-1 in the WAC with the loss ... Almudena Sanz lost to Sophia Bergner at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-2 ... the Vandals next travel to San Antonio, Texas starting April 5 for four matches against UTSA, New Mexico State, UT Arlington and Louisiana Tech.
LOUISIANA TECH (10-4, 5-1)
LA Tech improved to 10-4 on the season and 5-1 in WAC play with conference wins over Utah State and UTSA ... LA Tech only dropped one match from the weekend and only dropped three sets combined ... freshman Joanna Nalborska won her first match this season at the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over UTSA’s Jacobea Junger ... the doubles tandem of Nalborska and Starkova remain undefeated this season with an 8-0 record.
NEW MEXICO STATE (5-11, 1-3)
After nearly a week away from competition, the New Mexico State women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, March 30 ... NM State moves to 5-11 on the season ... Aggies Ginet Pinero and Ros-Polly Nguyen were the only win for NM State in doubles, allowing the crucial point to the Lobos ... NM State did come out with three of those singles wins ... Pinero worked for a two-set (6-2, 6-1) win at the No. 2 spot, while Nguyen knocked off her opponent in the fifth position in two sets also ... the Aggies continue on the road for three-straight conference matches next weekend ... NM State meets UT-Arlington on Friday, April 5 ... the weekend continues with a Saturday dual against Idaho and concludes against UTSA on Sunday, April 7.
SAN JOSE STATE (13-4, 5-0)
San Jose State University senior Chau Truong combined with sophomore Julianna Bacelar for the win at No. 3 doubles helping then No. 73 ranked Spartans to a 4-2 victory over host Texas State in a WAC women’s tennis match for the Spartans’ sixth win in a row ... Truong’s triumph in doubles was her 118th of her career setting a new San Jose State record for most combined wins by a women’s tennis player ... SJSU completed a three-day weekend sweep at the Bobcat Tennis Complex ... the Spartans defeated UT-Arlington, 4-2, on March 30, and Seattle University, 7-0, on March 29 ... the Spartans also got singles wins from Jessica Willett at No. 5 and Amber Walker at No. 6 ... the Spartans are next in action Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, in conference dual matches against Denver and host Utah State.
SEATTLE U (5-12, 0-5)
The Redhawks concluded a road trip that saw them play nine matches in seven days in three different cities ... they started out for three in San Jose, Calif., three in Las Vegas, Nev., and finished off with three more in San Marcos, Texas ... Lindsey Newman leads the team in dual singles victories with nine ... she and Sarah Lucas have 10 singles wins on the year in total, including the fall invitationals ... four Redhawks have claimed eight dual doubles victories, as Kristen James, Sarah Lucas, Corinne Wurden and Newman all have eight doubles wins ... James and Wurden have been paired together for much of the year. and so have Lucas and Newman ... Steffanie Mortera earned her first singles victory in any competition in over two years with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Western New Mexico’s Diamond Morril ... she followed that victory with another win three days later, taking down Texas A&M Kingsville’s Ashton Garcia 6-0, 6-2.
UT ARLINGTON (4-9, 3-2)
The UT Arlington women’s tennis team will host the North Texas Mean Green Tuesday, April 2 ... the Mavericks are 4-9 after winning two of their last three matches, which also bumped them up to 3-2 in the WAC ... Last season UTA traveled to Denton where North Texas defeated the Mavs 5-2.
UTSA (5-9, 03)
UTSA was shutout in both of its matches last week ... the Roadrunners were swept by then No. 63 Denver last Friday and blanked, 4-0, by Louisiana Tech two days later ... UTSA’s match against Utah State last Saturday was canceled due to rain.
UTAH STATE (4-7, 0-2)
Utah State’s women’s tennis match against UTSA that was scheduled for Saturday, March 30 in Ruston, La., was cancelled due to inclement weather ... Utah State, who is 4-7 thus far this spring and 0-2 in WAC play, returns to action this week with three home league matches as it hosts San Jose State on Friday, April 5 at 12 p.m., Texas State on Saturday, April 6 at 12 p.m. and Seattle on Sunday, April 7 at 9 a.m.
