WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Idaho opened its 2013 outdoor season at the Whitworth Buc Scoring Invite, competing with a petite group of athletes that consisted mainly of field performers ... Idaho won’t be at full capacity quite yet when it competes at the Stanford Invitational this weekend ... seniors Barry Britt, Ugis Svazs, Mike Marshall, and Jeremy Klas along with sophomore Matt Sullivan will make up the Idaho travel squad that will compete at Palo Alto, Calif. ... the last time the Idaho Track and Field team competed at the Stanford Invitational, a pair of top-10 marks were won on the track ... senior Liga Velvere won the women’s 400m hurdles while junior Hannah Kiser took the top place in her section of the 1500m.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
Louisiana Tech track and field will split squads again this weekend with the majority of the team heading to the prestigious 86th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays while distance runners will head to California for a pair of meets ... Louisiana Tech’s top athletes will compete in Austin, Texas against the nation’s top collegiate and professional competition, including former LA Tech standout and 2012 Olympian Chelsea Hayes ... The Texas Relays begin on Wednesday with the heptathlon and decathlon while Tech’s entrants will begin competition Thursday ... Matt Wolfe and Tom Stringer will run the San Francisco State Distance Carnival while Paul Sakit, qualified for the Stanford Invitational.
New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggies competed at the UTEP Springtime meet last weekend ... Brianna Cromartie finished first in the 400m dash with a time of 55.54 ... Lasasha Aldredge placed third (56.70) ... in the 3000m run Sarabel Bojorquez and Carly Porter finished first and second ... in the high jump Zoe Meade cleared a height of 1.65m ... she placed second ... the Aggies will be off until April 5, when they travel to the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
Seattle University Redhawks
By posting a time of 4:14.00 in the mile run Mar. 1 at the UW Final Qualifier at Dempsey Indoor, sophomore Collin Overbay not only broke the longest-standing indoor school record still on the books, but he also qualified for the 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships ... Overbay continued his record-breaking season last Saturday at the Oregon Preview, posting a new school record in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:30.19, almost three full seconds faster than the previous mark ... Seattle University will be represented by Erik Barkhaus at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival this weekend in the men's 10,000m.
University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks
The UT Arlington men’s and women’s track and field teams will be well represented this week at the 86th running of the prestigious Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays ... one of UTA’s top contenders for a high finish at the Texas Relays is All-American Romain Martinin the decathlon ... staying on the men’s side, the distance medley relay team of Ryan Tilotta, Sheldon Moss, Philip Critelli and Emil Blomberglooks poised for a strong run ...for the women’s squad, the sprint medley relay team of Shannon Reynolds, Keondra Mallard, DeAndrea Smith and Ashly Wrighthas its sights set on breaking the school record ... individually, Reynolds in the 100 meters and Sydney Hamptonin the 1500m will be among the athletes to track.
UTSA, led by individual titles by Ernestine Cray (triple jump), Alyssa Diaz (3,000m) and Nina Herrera (1,500m), captured last weekend’s Texas State Elite team championship with 139.5 points ... the Roadrunners edged I-35 rival and meet host Texas State by one point and No. 16 Illinois and 21st-ranked UCLA tied for third with 119 … UTSA also posted a half dozen second-place performances and a total of four bronze medals at the two-day meet ... Kerry Thompson won Saturday’s Texas State Elite men’s high jump title ... UTSA return to action this weekend at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays (March 28-30) and Trinity Tigers Relays (March 29).
Texas State Bobcats
Texas State has competed in two outdoor track meets already this season, so this weekend the Bobcats will challenge themselves with two meets in the same weekend ... several Texas State athletes will make the trip to Austin for the prestigious Texas Relays to last through Saturday while others will compete along with more than 30 other teams in the Bobcat Invitational at the Texas State Track and Field Complex Thursday and Friday.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State’s men and women’s track and field teams will open the 2013 outdoor season at three different meets this week including a trip to Austin, Texas for the 86th Texas Relays ... athletes will also travel to compete at the UVU Collegiate Invitational in Orem, Utah on Friday March 29, as well as the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif. on Friday and Saturday, March 29-30.
The 2013 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships travels to Arlington, Texas. This year’s championships will be hosted UT Arlington and will take place at Maverick Stadium beginning Mar. 8 and running through Mar. 11. The Idaho men and Utah State women claimed the championships last year.
