Louisiana Tech outfielder Bre’shon Kimbell has been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for March 18-24.

Kimbell, a sophomore from Mesquite, Texas (Mesquite HS), helped the Bulldogs to a pair of wins last week over Alcorn State and Seattle U. Kimbell hit .545 (6-for-11). He also tallied two walks, six RBI, two doubles, a home run and scored five runs. Kimbell began the week with a 2-for-3 day against Alcorn State, recording a double, a run scored and three RBI to help lead Tech to a 9-1 victory at home. The sophomore right fielder picked right up where he left off in the first series of WAC play as he went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, including a two-run home run in the first inning to help the Bulldogs to a 5-2 win over the Redhawks. He continued his impressive play in the second game of the three-game series against Seattle U with another 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a double, three runs scored and an RBI.

The other hitter of the week nominations: Dallas Baptist senior catcher Duncan McApline ... Seattle U sophomore first baseman/catcher Grant Newton ... UT Arlington junior Matt Shortall ... UTSA sophomore catcher John Bormann ... Texas State senior infielder Nick Smelser.

CSU Bakersfield right-hander Dylan Christensen has been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 18-24.

Christensen, a senior from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. (Saddleback College), appeared in three of the four games on the week. He picked up a five-out save at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday. The 6-0 righty earned the save in game of the Sacramento State series, retiring the Hornets in order in the ninth. Christensen earned the victory on Sunday in a two-inning stint. With runners on first and second and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, Christensen put out the fire with a double play and a pop out to second. He struck out two of the final four he faced in the 10th to secure the CSU Bakersfield victory. Overall on the week, Christensen worked 4.2 innings with two saves, three strikeouts. He gave up only two hits and no runs.

After succesful tournaments in Mesa, Ariz., the past three years, the WAC baseball tournament will now head to Grand Prairie, Texas this May. The event will be played at QuikTrip Park, home of the Grand Prairie Air Hogs. The Air Hogs play in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. The cities of Grand Prairie and Arlington will host the tournament with the winner earning the WAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The top eight teams from the WAC’s regular season standings will advance to the tournament.  The brand-new QuikTrip Park at Grand Prairie located in the heart of Grand Prairie’s Entertainment District directly between Lone Star Park and Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX. The $25 million venue, seats 5,500 guests and features 13 luxury suites. Amenities at the stadium include: The AirHogs Pool and Party Deck, the 17,000 sq. ft. Grand Prairie Wide World of Parks Playground, the FieldHouse Grill & Bar, the 3rd Base Party Deck, the Coors Light Officers Club and the Admirals Club. QuikTrip Park hosts special events such as live boxing, concerts, car shows, festivals and corporate events.


CSU Bakersfield (17-7, 2-1 WAC)
CSU Bakersfield went 3-1 last week, including a 2-1 mark against Sacramento State in its conference-opening weekend ... freshman Mylz Jones extended his hittting streak to 15 with a single against Sacramento State in the series finale Mar. 24 ... Jones’ hitting streak the longest since Jeremy Rodriguez set the school record with 19 straight hits during the 2010 season ... Cael Brockmeyer’s home run in the top of the 10th for CSUB against Sac State on Sunday was his team leading third of the year ... Dylan Christensen was a two-way threat as Bakersfield went 3-1 on the week including taking 2-of-3 from Sacramento State in its first ever WAC series ... Christensen hit .333 at the plate with two RBI’s ... Christensen also appeared in three of the four games on the mound ... he picked up a pair of saves on the week ... this week, CSUB continues WAC play against New Mexico State.

Dallas Baptist (13-11, 2-1 WAC)
Dallas Baptist went 2-1 last week in its first-ever WAC series against San Jose State ... Duncan McAlpine’s two home runs and OPS of 1.177 helped DBU to a weekend series win over San Jose State after a midweek loss to Texas A&M ... McAlpine played errorless baseball at both first base and catcher during the week ... Overall on the week, McAlpine had five hits, two home runs, five RBI, two runs and a pair of walks ... Nash Knight was also impressive at the plate ... Knight hit .400 with six hits, one runs cored, two doubles, one RBI and a pair of walks ... Dallas Baptist head coach Dan Heefner won his 199th game as Head Coach at Dallas Baptist Sunday ... the games against San Jose State marks DBU’s first conference series win in program’s Division I history ... this week, Dallas Baptist hosts Sacramento State for a three-game series that begins on Thursday ... DBU also travels to play TCU on Tuesday.

Louisiana Tech (10-16, 1-2 WAC)
After two midweek victories over UALR and Alcorn State, Louisiana Tech brought a four-game winning streak into the first conference series of the season as the Bulldogs hosted WAC-newcomer Seattle U for a Saturday-Sunday-Monday series ... Tech began the series with a 5-2 victory over the Redhawks in the conference opener, highlighted by a little long-ball action with a two-run homer by Bre’shon Kimbell and a solo shot by left fielder Sam Alvis over the course of Saturday’s game ... Kimbell Bre’shon Kimbell led the Bulldogs this weekend with a 6-for-11 performance with two hits in each of the three games he played this week ... Seattle U bounced back Sunday with 12-8 win over the Bulldogs to knot the series at 1-1 ... Tech dropped a 7-4 decision to Seattle U on Monday as the Redhawks to the series 3-1 ... this week, LA Tech hosts UT Arlington in a three-game series.  

New Mexico State (14-12, 1-2 WAC)
The NM State baseball team is 14-12 overall and is 1-2 in WAC play after the first week of conference play ... the Aggies head into the road series with the Roadrunners only 1-7 in away games ... NM State has won six out of the last eight games heading into Thursday’s game ... the Aggies are 12-8 against right-hand starters and are 5-2 when games are decided by one or two runs ... NM State has a better chance of winning when scoring first  as they are 7-1 so far when that happens ... the Aggies have outscored their opponents 201-164 this season, but were outscored 41-29 in the three-game series against Texas State last weekend ... there are four Aggies with at least 20 runs with junior Tanner Rust leading that category as he has crossed the plate 28 times ... New Mexico State travels to play at CSU Bakersfield for a three-game series on Thursday.

Sacramento State (13-10, 1-2 WAC)
Sacramento State will host former WAC-rival Fresno State on Tuesday at Raley Field — the home of the Sacramento River Cats ... the team will then make its second trip to Texas this year to face Dallas Baptist ... freshman Chris Lewis had his team season-long hit streak snapped on Sunday ... Lewis had hit successfully in 13 straight games ... Sunday’s loss was the first extra-inning game for Sacramento State this season ... Brennan Leitao appeared in both victories for Sacramento State during the week ... the sophomore came on for a scoreless inning of relief on Tuesday in the team’s 9-7 come-from-behind victory ... he then started on Saturday in a 5-0 shutout of CSU Bakersfield ... Despite battling the stomach flu, Leitao did not allow a run or walk against the Roadrunners ... he scattered nine hits in seven innings while striking out two.

San Jose State (7-17, 1-2 WAC)
San Jose State went 2-3 last week ... the Spartans opened the week with a 3-1 victory over California at home ... the team then dropped two of three games to Dallas Baptist in its season-opening WAC series ... SJSU then dropped a 9-2 decision to UC Davis on Monday ... over the last five games, Ricky Acosta has led the Spartans at the plate, batting .385 with five hites, one run, three RBI and five walks ... Matt Carroll hit .300 with six hits, one run, two doubles, five RBI and a walk ... on the mound, D.J. Slaton and Daniel Chavez each picked up victories last week ... Slaton pitched 5.0 innings in his appearance, giving up only one run and two hits ... he also picked up a apair of strikeouts in the win ... Kyle Hassna pitched 6.0 innings on the week without giving up a single run ... Hassna struck out two ... this week, SJSU travels to play UTSA for a three-game series.

Seattle U (10-13, 2-1 WAC)
Seattle University played its first conference games over the weekend, starting its weekend series with Louisiana Tech Saturday in order to complete winter quarter finals before heading on the road ... the Redhawks lost the first game of the series, 5-2 ... in Sunday’s game, the Redhawks fell behind twice, 5-2 and 8-6, before scoring three times in the eighth and three more runs in the ninth for a 12-8 victory ... Seattle U won the final game of the series on Monday 7-4 to capture the series 2-1 ... Grant Newton has led Seattle U with five hits, including two doubles and a home run, during the first two games of the weekend series against Louisiana Tech ... Will Dennis was a key member of the Seattle U bullpen during the first two games of the opening WAC series against Tech last week ... Dennis pitched 3.0 innings without giving up a hit or a run ... SU now heads to San Marcos for an Easter series against Texas State.

UT Arlington (12-11, 2-1 WAC)
The Mavericks will travel to College Station, Texas to face Texas A&M, their first SEC opponent since 2008 (Last: Alabama, W, 12-8, 3/2/2008, Arlington, Texas) ... UTA is 8-24 all-time against the Aggies and the Mavs won the last meeting 3-2 on April 10 of last season in College Station ... the Mavericks will then continue WAC play with a three-game series against Louisiana Tech Friday-Sunday in Ruston, La. ... Matt Shortall continues his 13-game hitting streak this week ... in those 13 games, he is 22-56 (.393) with six doubles, one home run, 18 RBI, eight runs and a .554 slugging percentage ... Zach Thompson improved to 2-2 on the season after earning the win over UTSA to claim the series ... in his six innings pitched, Thompson only allowed four hits and walked four ... he struck out five including two in the fifth inning ... Thompson allowed only 2 runs to UTSA and were the only runs scored for them in the contest.

Texas State (9-14, 2-1 WAC)
Texas State started conference play with an impressive weekend against New Mexico State ... after dropping the opener, 12-6, the Bobcats stormed back behind pitcher Scott Grist and the hitting of Garrett Mattlage (4-for-5) to take game two, 10-3, then followed it with a Sunday win, 12-7, behind four hitless innings for pitcher Lucas Humpal and four RBI for Nick Smelser. This week, Texas State travels to play Texas in the midweek and returns home to host Seattle on Thursday through Saturday ... Nick Smelser knocked four RBI in Sunday’s game with two hits and a walk … he led team in batting average, hits, RBI, runs, total bases (11), on-base percentage (.571) and slugging percentage (.846) … Smelser knocked first two RBI Sunday for an early lead and the next two RBI were go ahead runs to make it 9-7 ... this week, Texas State hosts Seattle U in a three-game outdoor series.
