WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
After a notable indoor season - one that saw five school records, two Western Athletic Conference records, six individual WAC titles, 10 First-Team All-WAC honors, and one Vandal earn a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association First-Team All-American honors, the Vandals will transfer their focus to the outdoor season ... Idaho’s outdoor season opens Friday Mar. 22 with the Buc Scoring Invitational at Spokane, Wash. ... Hannah Kiser left the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as an All-American two weeks ago.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
LA Tech’s Joshua Cox set a school record in the javelin ... Cox, a Ruston native, broke a school record held by another Ruston native, former Bulldog thrower Larry Jones ... Cox set a new record of 67.26m (220-08) ... Charla Craddock set a new personal best long jump mark as she jumped 19-11 (6.07m) to win the event ... Tech swept the 100m dashes with Dennis Richardson claiming the men’s race with a new facility record and personal best time of 10.32 while Victoria Wade won the women’s race with a time of 11.97 ... The Lady Techsters dominated in the 100m hurdles as Kim Francis ran a dominating 13.53, more than a half-second better than the rest of the field.
New Mexico State Aggies
The New Mexico State University track and field team wrapped up its first meet of the outdoor season with the Willie Williams Classic by claiming four individual titles ... Alishia Perkins, Courtney Schultz, Brianna Cromartie and Zoe Meade each earned first place overall in their respective events ... Perkins place first overall in the 200m, finishing in a time of 23.79, moving her up to second all-time for NM State ... Shultz placed first overall in the 5,000m, posting a time of 17:15.02 ... In the 400m hurdles, Meade finished first overall with a time of 1:02.96, placing her fifth all time for NM State ... Cromartie won the title for the 400m, running a time of 53.63 which places her second all-time for NM State ... the Aggies will travel to UTEP next weekend for the UTEP Springtime.
Seattle University Redhawks
By posting a time of 4:14.00 in the mile run Mar. 1 at the UW Final Qualifier at Dempsey Indoor, sophomore Collin Overbay not only broke the longest-standing indoor school record still on the books, but he also qualified for the 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships ... Overbay continued his record-breaking season last Saturday at the Oregon Preview, posting a new school record in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:30.19, almost three full seconds faster than the previous mark ... the Seattle University track and field team is in the middle of taking winter quarter finals, after which the student-athletes will prepare for the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday, Mar. 29-30.
University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks
The UT Arlington track and field programs will host the 37th annual Bobby Lane Invitational this Saturday at Maverick Stadium ... the meet will feature a large slate of college teams as well as several high-profile professionals ... the UTA men, which begin the outdoor season ranked 33rd in the nation, are led by NCAA Indoor All-Americans Romain Martin (decathlon), Bozidar Antunovic (shot put) and Clayton Vaughn (100m and 200m) ... seniors Shannon Reynolds (100m and 200m) and DeAndrea Smith (200m and 400m) pace the women.
UTSA opens the outdoor campaign at Saturday’s Texas State Elite meet ... Richard Garrett Jr. earned first-team All-America honors in the shot put on Mar. 8 with his fourth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships ... it marked the fourth All-America certificate of his career (two indoor/two outdoor) … the Roadrunners captured their eighth consecutive indoor conference title last month when they won the WAC Championships ... gold medals by seniors Katie Bragg (weight throw) and Eboni Johnson (triple jump) helped the Roadrunners finish second at last month’s WAC Indoor Championships, which was their best conference finish since 1997.
Texas State Bobcats
Texas State welcomes a number of champions to San Marcos this weekend for the Texas State Elite Meet to be held Friday and Saturday ... Arkansas, Texas, UCLA, Illinois and UTSA will join the Bobcats in a scored competition ... the 2013 outdoor season is still young, but some Texas State Bobcats have already put together top 10 performances in the nation ... William Murray is ranked ninth nationally in the long jump while Darian Brown is fourth in the discus.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State will begin the outdoor season as they travel to three different meets the week of Mar. 27-30 ... USU will send athletes to the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, Wednesday through Saturday, Mar. 27-30 ... athletes will also travel to compete at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif., as well as the UVU Collegiate Invitational in Orem, Utah on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 29-30.
The 2013 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships travels to Arlington, Texas. This year’s championships will be hosted UT Arlington and will take place at Maverick Stadium beginning Mar. 8 and running through Mar. 11. The Idaho men and Utah State women claimed the championships last year.
