UT Arlington Earns CIT Invite, Draws Oral Roberts
UT Arlington is in the postseason for the second consecutive season, third time under head coach Scott Cross and fourth time in the program's history. The Mavericks competed in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in 2012 and the NCAA Tournament in 2008 under Cross' direction. UT Arlington also took part in the 1981 NIT.
The CIT bid is the first for the program and also marks the first postseason game at College Park Center. UT Arlington is in the midst of its first full season at College Park Center, a 7,000-seat on-campus arena which opened on Feb. 1, 2012.
"We're extremely excited to continue our season in the College Insider.com Postseason Tournament," UT Arlington athletics director Jim Baker said. "To be in the postseason for the second year in a row shows the tremendous progress Coach Cross, his staff and the players are making in building our program into something special at UT Arlington."
The Mavericks reached the championship game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, falling Saturday night 64-55 to New Mexico State. UT Arlington's 19 victories are the fifth most in a season in program history. There have been only four 20-win seasons at UT Arlington, with two under Cross' watch.
"We're excited to be in the postseason for the second straight year," Cross said. "We came up a little bit short in our goal to win the WAC Tournament, but to keep our season alive in the CIT and go for 20 wins is a great opportunity and reward for our players.
"We need the support of Mavericks everywhere on Wednesday at College Park Center to give us a real home-court advantage against a very talented Oral Roberts team."
Oral Roberts is in its first season in the Southland Conference. The Golden Eagles lost in the quarterfinals of the SLC Tournament, 58-55, to Sam Houston State.
The all-time series with Oral Roberts is tied 3-3. The schools last met in 2002, with the Mavericks winning 83-77 in overtime in Arlington.
