SOUTHERN UTAH’S CHERNOCH AND BOISE STATE’S POTVIN-GREEN NAMED WAC GYMNASTS OF THE WEEK
Southern Utah’s Michaela Chernoch and Boise State’s Brittany Potvin-Green have been named the Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 25-March 3.
Chernoch, a senior from Naples, Fla. (Barron Collier HS), recorded a career-best 39.300 to claim the all-around title in a dual meet against Boise State. She also won the individual title on beam after scoring a career-best 9.875. Chernoch recorded SUU’s top mark on floor, a 9.875 to tie her best mark of the season on the event.
Potvin-Green, a senior from San Antonio, Texas (James Madison HS), tied her career best on floor with a 9.950 to share the title with teammate Kelsey Black in a dual conference meet against Southern Utah. Potvin-Green’s score tied for a school record performance and helped the Broncos to tie the school record for team floor score (49.575). Potvin-Green also competed on vault, scoring a 9.650 and on beam where she led the Broncos with a 9.825.
Other Gymnast of the Week Nominees: Boise State junior Kelsey Black earned a 39.625 to place third in the all-around, while earning a career-best 9.950 on floor … Denver junior Jorie Hall turned in a 9.925 on beam and a 9.900 on floor … Sacramento State sophomore Kalliah McCartney won her sixth all-around title of the year with a 39.225 … Utah State junior Paige Jones tied for third in the all-around with a 38.275.
Other Specialist of the Week Nominees: Sacramento State freshman Cassie Benning tied for first on floor and matched her career best with a 9.825 … Southern Utah sophomore Ana Jaworski earned a career-best 9.850 on beam … Utah State sophomore Sarah Landes won the vault title with a 9.825, her fourth title of the season.
DENVER 13TH, BOISE STATE 23RD IN LATEST NATIONAL RANKINGS
Denver was ranked No. 13 and Boise State is No. 23 in the latest GymInfo rankings (by regional qualifying score). DU’s RQS improved to 196.150 this week, while Boise State’s improved to 195.485. On individual events, the Pioneers are No. 13 on vault (49.155), No. 10 on bars (49.115), No. 18 on beam (48.925) and No. 10 on floor (49.155). Boise State ranks No. 22 on vault (49.030), No. 12 on bars (49.075), No. 38 on beam (48.430) and No. 40 on floor (48.810).
SOUTHERN UTAH TO HOST 2013 WAC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIP
This year’s Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championship will take place at Southern Utah’s Centrum Arena in Cedar City, Utah on March 23. The event will begin at 6 p.m. (MT). For more information on the event, visit the WAC Championships page at www.wacsports.com.
WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Boise State Broncos (9-2, 1-1 WAC)
Boise State earned its best score of the season on March 1, a 196.575 ... the score ties for the eighth-best in school history ... the Broncos tied a school record on floor with a 49.575 team total on March 1 ... Kelsey Black and Brittany Potvin-Green each earned a career-best score of 9.950 on floor to tie for the floor title this past week ... Boise State has two remaining regular season competitions, in San Jose, Calif., on March 8 and in Logan, Utah, on March 15.
Denver Pioneers (14-2, 4-0 WAC)
Last week’s team score (196.800) was the sixth-highest score in team history, and Denver’s third-highest road score. DU’s bars team score (49.300) was also its sixth-highest ... on individual events, Denver stayed put at No. 13 on vault (49.155), moved up to No. 10 on bars (49.115), moved up to No. 18 on beam (48.925) and moved up to No. 10 on beam (49.155) ... Denver is currently No. 13 in the nation with a RQS of 196.150 ... DU will host Arizona State and Illinois State Saturday.
Sacramento State Hornets (4-9, 2-1 WAC)
Sacramento State will compete in its final meet away from Northern California during the regular season when it travels to Oregon State for a three-team meet which also includes Washington ... the highest team score in school history came at Oregon State in 2004 ... senior Nicole Meiller tied for first on bars against Utah State marking her seventh career victory on the event as the Hornets defeated the Aggies.
San Jose State Spartans (9-9, 1-2 WAC)
San Jose State gymnastics earned the third-best team score in school history, a 195.700, and won a tightly-contested non-conference dual at UC Davis on Friday, March 1 ... the Spartans’ consistency on every apparatus (the team had just one fall on during the meet) edged the Aggies, 195.700-195.475 ... this week, San Jose State hosts a quad meet that will feature UC Davis, Seattle Pacific and Boise State.
Southern Utah Thunderbirds (4-7, 2-2 WAC)
SUU dropped a dual meet against Boise State his past week ... Michaela Chernoch recorded a career-best 39.300 in the all-around, taking the individual title in addition to an title on the balance beam after scoring a career-best 9.875 ... Ana Jaworski came back from a fall on the uneven bars, where she was unable to finish her routine, to score a 9.750 on the floor exercise and a career-best 9.850 on the balance beam.
Utah State Aggies (3-10, 0-4 WAC)
The Aggies had two meets in four days this week, falling to both Sacramento State and BYU ... the team notched a 193.400 in a close fight at Sacramento State Friday, while falling to in-state rival BYU on Monday night at home with a 192.900 ... USU had a series of event wins as well as several career and season-highs in the two losses ... Sarah Landes finished second in the all-around in Friday’s dual-meet at Sacramento State with a 39.075.
