WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week Announced
The Richmond, Calif. native led the Spartans to a sweep of UT Arlington and Louisiana Tech with a pair of double-doubles. Against UTA, she finished with 14 points on 50 percent shooting, pulled down 15 boards, nabbed three steals and blocked four shots. With the four blocks, she set the San Jose State single-season record, which now stands at 60, and is in ninth place on the career blocked shots list. Against LA Tech, Byrd was an efficient 7-of-11 (64 percent) from the field for 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds and a steal. For the week, she averaged 15 points on 56 percent shooting, 14.5 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Her 288 rebounds on the year place her in sixth place on the program’s single-season list and are a freshman record for the program.
Other nominees included: Denver’s Kailey Edwards finished with 23 points on 62 percent shooting to go along with three rebounds and two steals in a win over New Mexico State ... Alyssa Charlston of Idaho averaged 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists as the Vandals went 2-0 on the week ... New Mexico State’s Kelsie Rozendaal finished with 15 points on 86 percent shooting and seven rebounds in a loss to Denver ... Seattle U’s Sylvia Shephard averaged 16.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as the Redhawks went 2-0 on the week Jenna Johnson of Utah State averaged 15 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals as the Aggies went 2-0 on the week.
