WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Idaho Vandals
The University of Idaho track and field 4x400m
relay team broke a 12-year school record Saturday at the Western Athletic
Conference Championships ... the quartet of junior Karlene Hurrel, senior
Lauren Schaffer, senior Keli Hall and senior Liga Velvere ran a time of 3:41.57
breaking the previous school record of 3:43.48 from the 2001 season ... senior
Barry Britt won the 3000m with a time of 8:29.85 to give him two titles for the
weekend ... He was honored with WAC Track Performer of The Year and The WAC High Point Award ... the Vandal men finished the conference meet in fifth place with 64 points, 21 points ahead of sixth-place Louisiana Tech, while the women finished in sixth with 71.50
points.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
Louisiana Tech's women's track and field team
finished fourth while the men finished six as action wrapped up at the Western
Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships ... the Lady Techsters
won two gold medals on the final day of the championship meet and finished in
fourth place overall as a team, scoring 95 points ... the Bulldogs finished
sixth overall with 48 points scored in the meet ... Kimberly Smith (60m dash)
and Kim Francis (60m hurdles) claimed the two golds ... athletes will now await the NCAA Championship
qualification and descending order lists, to be announced prior to the NCAA
Championships which will be held on March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
New Mexico State Aggies
The New Mexico State University track and field
team claimed third place overall at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor
Championships for the second-straight year, and was also highlighted by junior
Brianna Cromartie being named WAC Athlete of the Year ... NM State finished
with a 109 total points, which ended up being seven points behind second-place
UTSA ... Cromartie was also the High Point champion for the WAC Indoor
Championships with a total individual point score of 18.5 ... Alishia Perkins
joins Cromartie was co-High Point champion when she equaled Cromartie's point
total ... the Aggies begin the outdoor track and field season on March 15 in
Tucson, Ariz., with the Willie Williams Classic.
Seattle University Redhawks
The Seattle University track and field team capped
off the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships
by breaking the school records in both the men's and the women's 4x400 relays
... the men's 4x400 meter relay finished sixth in their event in 3:18.98, 3.43
seconds faster than the previous mark set on Jan. 31, 2009 ... the women's 4x400 meter relay team put
together a time of 4:01.59, 56/100ths of a second faster than the previous
record set Feb. 13, 2011 ... in the field events, Melu cleared 2.00 meters (6'
6.75") to finish in 10th place in the men's high jump ... the Seattle
University track and field team is scheduled to participate in the UW Final
Qualifier next Friday, March 1.
University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks
The UT Arlington men's indoor track and field team
placed second and the women took fifth at the Western Athletic Conference
Championships ... the men scored 137 points to fall just 22 shy of the title,
while the women garnered 92.5 points ... Clayton Vaughn was the star for the
Mavericks, as he completed an impressive double by sweeping both the 60-meter
and 200-meter dashes ... With 20 points, he shared High Point honors at the
meet ... Katelyn Hayward won a conference title in the women's mile with a
season-best time of 4:55.48 ... DeOna Stafford equaled the UTA record in the
60m hurdles with a time of 8.62 ... she placed third in the event, two spots
ahead of Porschea Wilson (8.77).
UTSA Roadrunners
The UTSA men's track & field team continued
its unprecedented run of success on Saturday, as it rallied from third place in
the team standings to capture the WAC Indoor Championship ... it marked the
Roadrunners' eighth consecutive league title following their record run of
seven straight after closing out Southland Conference competition a year ago
... Eboni Johnson picked up UTSA's second gold medal in as many days and that helped
lead Roadrunners to a runner-up finish at this weekend's WAC Championship ...
Johnson skipped to a personal-best measurement of 41-5 ¾ (12.64m) on her sixth
and final attempt of the afternoon to claim UTSA's first-ever triple jump
title.
Texas State Bobcats
Texas state women won the Indoor Track and Field
Championship, edging out UT-San Antonio by six points, 122-116 ... the women
racked up three gold, three silver and four bronze medals to help Head Coach
Dana Boone be recognized as the WAC Indoor Track and Field Women's Coach of the
Year ... Boone led the women to the team's first championship since 2007 ...
the men brought back 10 medals, including three gold, to finish fourth in the
standings ... also taking home an individual award was senior thrower Kelsey
Titzman, recognized as the WAC Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
Utah State Aggies
USU will continue the 2013 indoor season at the UW
Final Qualifier hosted by Washington on March 1, in Seattle, Wash. ... Alex
Litzsinger and freshman Tylee Newman will represent the Utah State women in the
distance events, while freshman Briton Page and senior Tyler Killpack will
represent the Aggie men in the 800m ... Utah State's men and women's track
& field teams finished third and seventh overall as teams, while having 16
athletes named first-team all-WAC and 16 athletes named second-team all-WAC ...
Rachel Orr cleared a personal-best height of 1.77m (5-09.75) to place second in
the women's high jump ... Briton Page was the only Aggie to win his own event
as ran a time of 1:50.67 to win the 800m.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2013 Indoor Track & Field National
Championships once again travels to Fayetteville, Ark. All events will be held
at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
