Denver’s Nina McGee and Moriah Martin have been named the Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 18-24.

McGee, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio (Clark Montessori HS), won the bars title with a 9.900, won the beam title with a 9.900 and placed third on floor with a 9.825 in a quad meet against Boise State, Utah State and Rutgers last week. McGee has now scored a 9.800 or higher in 10 of her last 11 routines. The Pioneer sophomore has a 9.853 average on bars and a 9.854 average on floor. Currently, McGee is No. 15 in the nation on bars with a 9.865 RQS.

Martin, a junior from Lake Mary, Fla. (Lake Mary HS), recorded a high-scoring vault for a second straight week, tallying a 9.950 to lead Denver to a 49.175 on the apparatus, its best event score at last week’s quad meet. Martin’s vault was her 18th-career vault of 9.900 or higher, her fifth of the season and her fourth-straight. She is currently No. 7 on the event this season with a 9.900 RQS.

Other Gymnast of the Week Nominees: Boise State sophomore Kelsey Morris scored a 38.725 to place fourth in the all-around … Sacramento State sophomore Kalliah McCartney claimed another all-around title with a 39.325 in a team win over UC Davis … San Jose State junior Cassandra Harrison won the floor title with a 9.900 and placed second in the all-around …Utah State sophomore Sarah Landes finished second in the all-around with a 39.075.

Other Specialist of the Week Nominees: Boise State junior Kelsey Black tied her career best on bars with a 9.875 … Sacramento State junior Kailey Hansen won the bars title with a 9.900 … San Jose State junior Bekah Gher placed third on beam with a 9.800 … Utah State freshman Kinzey Martinez tied for second on vault with a career-best 9.900.


Denver was ranked No. 13 and Boise State is No. 27 in the latest GymInfo rankings (by average). DU’s average improved to 195.990 this week, while Boise State’s dropped to 195.195. On individual events, the Pioneers are No. 13 on vault (    49.155), No. 13 on bars (49.005), No. 20 on beam (48.815) and No. 11 on floor (49.055). Boise State ranks No. 21 on vault (49.020), No. 14 on bars (48.970), No. 37 on beam (48.360) and No. 41 on floor (48.670).

Boise State Broncos (8-2, 0-1 WAC)
BSU returns home for its final home meet of the season on March 1, competing against Southern Utah ... Boise State dropped from 16 to 27 this past week in the national rankings ... Boise State still holds a season-best of 196.325 which they scored against BYU on Feb. 1 ... Kelsey Black tied her career-best score on bars, 9.875, to place second at the Denver Winterfest meet on Feb. 23 ... Kelsey Morris competed in just her second all-around of the season, scoring a 38.725 to place fourth.

Denver Pioneers (11-2, 4-0 WAC)
The Pioneers clinched their first regular season conference title last Saturday with wins over Utah State and Boise State ... Denver is currently No. 13 in the nation with a RQS of 195.990 ... DU will return to the road for a rare Sunday meet, as the Pioneers travel to No. 16 West Virginia ... Denver had nine scores of 9.800 or higher ... on individual events, Denver ranks No. 13 on vault (49.155), No. 13 on bars (49.005), No. 20 on beam (48.815) and No. 11 on floor (49.055).

Sacramento State Hornets (3-9, 1-1 WAC)
Sacramento State continues its run of home meets when it faces Utah State on Friday ... the Hornets jumped two spots in the national rankings and are now 40th ... senior Cayla Beutler tied for first on floor against UC Davis ... Kalliah McCartney claimed another victory in the all-around, scoring 39.325 in the victory over UC Davis ... she tied her career high to win bars (9.825) and tied for first on floor (9.825) ... competing in just her third meet of the year, Kailey Hansen finished first on bars with a 9.900.

San Jose State Spartans (8-9, 1-2 WAC)

Against California and Brown, Cassandra Harrison won the floor and earned her second 9.900 in four days against California and Brown ... she also placed second on vault with a 9.850 (a career-high) and in the all-around with a 39.100 ... Bekah Gher placed third on beam with a 9.800 after she won the beam against Utah State and Brown three days earlier with a season-high 9.850.

Southern Utah Thunderbirds (4-6, 2-1 WAC)

Southern Utah opened the meet at Brigham Young University on Saturday afternoon going 21-for-21 on routines, but suffered three falls to end the meet to score a 194.075 ... the Cougars closed out the meet with one of their best team scores on floor (48.900) to take the victory with a 195.800 ... Michaela Chernoch led the way for the T-Birds on vault with a career-best 9.825 to tie for the individual title ... Chernoch also won the floor title with a 9.875.

Utah State Aggies  (3-8, 0-3 WAC)
A short-handed Utah State team took on three competitors in a quad-meet at WAC rival Denver, finishing fourth with a score of 192.150 ... Utah State scored a 46.600 on beam, 48.150 on floor, 48.800 on vault and 48.600 on bars ... Paige Jones and Sarah Landes participated in the all-around competition ... Landes finished second with a 39.075 while Jones finished sixth with a 38.425 ... Kinzey Martinez had a solid outing as she finished tied for second on vault with a career-high 9.900.
