SOUTHERN UTAH’S ARMIJO AND DENVER’S MARTIN  NAMED WAC GYMNASTS OF THE WEEK
Southern Utah’s Jamie Armijo and Denver’s Moriah Martin have been named the Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 11-17.

Armijo, a sophomore from Chandler, Ariz. (Mountain Pointe HS), tallied a career high in the all-around with a 39.275 to claim the event title in a dual meet against Sacramento State. Armijo also captured the individual title on beam with a career-best 9.825. She recorded second place finishes on vault (9.825) and bars (9.850).

Martin, a junior from Lake Mary, Fla. (Lake Mary HS), came up just short of a perfect 10, recording a 9.975 at Illinois-Chicago last week. The score tied a career high, matching her vault output against Ohio State on Feb. 4, 2011. Martin’s vault was her 17th-career vault of 9.900 or higher, her fourth of the season and her third straight.

Other Gymnast of the Week Nominees: Boise State sophomore Caitlin Mann tied a career best in the all-around with a 39.200 … San Jose State junior Cassandra Harrison placed third or better in four of five events … Utah State freshman Kinzey Martinez won the title on bars with a carere0high 9.875.

Other Specialist of the Week Nominees: Boise State sophomore Ciera Perkins tied a career best with a 9.900 on bars … San Jose State junior Bekah Gher won the beam title with a season-high 9.850 … Southern Utah senior Michaela Chernoch captured a pair of individual titles on bars (9.875) and on floor (9.850) … Utah State freshman Stefanie Daley tied for the beam title with a 9.850.

DENVER 13TH, BOISE STATE 16TH IN LATEST NATIONAL RANKINGS

Denver was ranked No. 12 and Boise State is No. 16 in the latest GymInfo rankings (by average). DU’s average improved to 195.796 this week, while Boise State’s improved to 195.555 . On individual events, the Pioneers are No. 14 on vault (    49.082), No. 11 on bars (48.961), No. 19 on beam (48.739) and No. 11 on floor (49.014). Boise State ranks No. 15 on vault (49.075 ), No. 8 on bars (49.040), No. 25 on beam (48.540) and No. 20 on floor (48.900).

SOUTHERN UTAH TO HOST 2013 WAC GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIP

This year’s Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championship will take place at Southern Utah’s Centrum Arena in Cedar City, Utah on March 23. The event will begin at 6 p.m. (MT). For more information on the event, visit the WAC Championships page at www.wacsports.com.

WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

Boise State Broncos (6-1, 0-0 WAC)
Out of the 25 individual titles possible in the three meets they’ve had, Boise State has won or shared 18 titles ... the Broncos earned a 49.350 score on bars, tying the fourth-best score in school history at Oklahoma ... Boise State closes out February on the road traveling to No. 9 Nebraska on Feb. 22 ... Boise State remains at No. 16 for the third week in a row ... the Broncos have one remaining home meet on their schedule, Southern Utah on March 1.

Denver Pioneers (8-2, 2-0 WAC)

Denver is 13th in this week’s national rankings with a seven-meet average of 195.796 ... DU’s RQS is 195.855, the 12th-best in the nation ... the Pioneers will return home this weekend, resuming Western Athletic Conference action against Utah State and Rutgers ... DU had 13 scores of 9.800 or higher at UIC last week ... freshman Emily Barrett inked a 38.925 in her all-around debut at UIC last week.

Sacramento State Hornets (2-9, 1-1 WAC)

Led by a pair of all-arounders who scored 39-plus, the Sacramento State gymnastics team posted its highest score of the year (195.250) on Friday night ... the Hornets scored season highs on vault, beam and floor en route to tying for the ninth highest total score in school history ... this week, Sacramento State hosts UC Davis in a dual meet on Friday at 7 p.m. PT.

San Jose State Spartans (8-9, 1-2 WAC)
Cassandra Harrison’s near-flawless floor performance capped off a night of season- and career-highs for San Jose State women’s gymnastics, as they bested Brown and Western Athletic Conference (WAC) rivals Utah State with a 2013-best 194.550 ... competing in the all-around, Harrison’s career-high 39.200 was the 13th-highest score in school history ... Bekah Gher had the meet’s second-highest score, a 38.800 ... SJSU scored a 105.000 at a Cal Tri meet on Monday.  

Southern Utah Thunderbirds (4-5, 2-1 WAC)

Each of Southern Utah’s all-around individuals recorded career-best marks against Sacramento State this past week ... Jamie Armijo (39.275), Michaela Chernoch (39.200) and Caitlin Kennedy (39.125) ... Southern Utah gymnasts captured individual titles on each event against Sacramento State, with the exception of vault ... the victory over Sacramento State snapped a two-meet losing streak to the Hornets ... SUU travels to take on BYU on Saturday.

Utah State Aggies  (3-5, 0-2 WAC)
Utah State scored a 193.225 to finish in second-place in a tri-meet against San Jose State in WAC competition and Brown University ... the Aggies recorded a 48.825 on vault, 48.625 on bars, 48.075 on beam and 47.700 on floor for their second-place total of 193.225 ... Kinzey Martinez took home her fourth event title in as many meets with a win on vault after a career-high 9.875 ... freshman Stefanie Daley tied for the beam title with a 9.850 and Jones finished second on floor with a 9.825.
