WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Idaho hosted three meets over the weekend ... Liga Velvere competed for the third day in a row on the track and won the women's 400m with a time of 56.91 ... Ian Middleton took second in the men's 800m with a time of 2:02.12 ... Reba Eggert took seventh in the long jump at 14-9.25 (4.50m) ... Stephanie Rexus (10:51.97) and junior Ailene MacPherson (11:42.10) tallied career-best times in the women's 3000m on Saturday ... Jeff Osborn ran a career-best 1:56.44 and finished fourth in the 800m ... Jerrica Hauck hit a career-best 11-9.75 (3.60m) in the women's pole vault to move into fourth in the WAC in the event on Friday ... Idaho will travel to Seattle for two meets at University of Washington over the weekend.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
Dennis Richardson barely missed out on a school record and Niko Richey won the open 60m dash by three-thousandths of a second as the Louisiana Tech sprinters dominated in the final day of the Howie Ryan Invitational ... Richardson's time of 6.69 in the elite 60m finals was 0.01 shy of the school record time ... Kimberly Smith finished fifth in the elite 60m dash with a time of 7.49 after running 7.50 in the prelims ... Kim Francis continued to excel in the hurdles, winning the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.45 after matching her own personal record time of 8.39, which is also the 10th fastest time in school history ... Tech returns to action on Feb. 8-9 at Fayetteville, Ark.
New Mexico State Aggies
The New Mexico State University track and field team concluded the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday, Feb. 2, highlighted by three new all-time school records ... Jenna Banegas placed seventh overall in the 60m with a time of 7.59, improving upon her career-best record to keep her at second all-time for NM State ... Alishia Perkins placed first overall with a time of 24.17 in the 200m ... Diana Hawk finished ninth overall with a time of 2:19.18 in the 800m ... Deserae Cota marked a distance of 17-10.25 (5.44m) in the long jump to place seventh overall ... this weekend NM State will split squads and head to Seattle and Albuquerque for the Husky Invite and Don Kirby Invite, respectively.
Seattle University Redhawks
Four more school records, including the longest-standing standard entering the indoor season, were broken as the Seattle University track and field team continued competition at the UW Invitational ... Shaddye Melu broke a seven-year-old school record in the men's high jump, clearing 1.97 meters (6' 5.5") on his second try to raise the record by one-and-a-half inches ... Meeghan Bergmann finished second in her heat of the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.96 seconds ... Sophie Curatilo (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished eighth in her section of the women's one mile run with a time of 5:03.56 ... Seattle University returns to Dempsey Indoor in two weeks, with some competitors participating in the Husky Classic Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9.
University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks
The UT Arlington women's team finished second, while the men's squad placed fifth at the Varsity Apartments Invitational in Wichita, Kan. ... Shannon Reynolds was a two-event winner for the Mavericks ... she was victorious in the 60-meter dash with a season-best time of 7.50 and also grabbed gold in the 200m (24.63) ... UTA's other victory came courtesy of Ashly Wright ... Wright won the 800 meters with a clocking of 2:10.73 ... Craig Lautenslager clocked a time of 4:16.84 in his first mile run of the year ... Lionel Mungwari finished as the runner up in the long jump (24-00.25) and Omar Barnes took fourth in the triple jump (46-08.25) ... The Mavericks will next run in the Oklahoma Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 16.
The Roadrunner men have picked up a total of 14 gold medals and set a pair of school records through the season's first five meets ... UTSA athletes/relays currently sit atop the WAC standings in nine events ... senior All-Americans Richard Garrett Jr. (shot put/ninth) and Keith Benford (high jump/t-14th) and junior Kerry Thompson (high jump/t-20th) all rank among the top 20 nationally in their respective event ... the UTSA women have registered eight wins and set a pair of program records through the season's first five meets ... the distance medley relay lead the WAC standings following their school-record performance of 11:41.25 at last weekend's Armory Collegiate Invitational ... UTSA is off until the WAC Championships.
Texas State Bobcats
Junior transfer Chelsea Stephen set a school record won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95 seconds and had a season-best time of 7.22 seconds to finish seventh in the 55-meter dash ... Darian Brown won the men's weight throw with the second-best throw in school history with 18.46 meters ... Jalisa Hall won the women's weight throw with the second-best mark in school history with a throw of 18.11m ... Tyrone Jackson and Joseph Rodriguez also had season-best times in the mile run with 4:24.68 and 4:26.60, respectively ... Texas State continues its indoor season on Feb. 9 when the Bobcats travel to the Texas A&M Invitational.
Utah State Aggies
Heading into their final weekend of regular season competition the Utah State men and women's indoor track and field teams will split action at three meets Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, including the Boise State Team Challenge in Nampa, Idaho, along with the New Mexico hosted Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. and the Washington hosted Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
The 2013 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships travel to Albuquerque, N.M. This year's championships will be hosted by the WAC and will take place at the Albuquerque Convention Center beginning Feb. 21 and running through Feb. 23. The Idaho men and Utah State women claimed the championships last year.
The 2013 Indoor Track & Field National Championships once again travels to Fayetteville, Ark. All events will be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
