CSU Bakersfield defeated Loyola Marymount for the first time in a women's swimming dual at UC San Diego Saturday ... the 186-102 victory over the Lions is the first in 11 attempts ... the Roadrunners did not win an individual event on the day but consistent placings helped CSUB earn the victory over Loyola Marymount ... the Roadrunners lost 210.5-81.5 to No. 3 UC San Diego in the other portion of the tri-dual ... Ali Gillespie placed second in the 200 free (1:54.84) and third in the 100 free ... Michaela Paige earned a second place showing in the 500 free (5:09.63) ... CSUB is at UC Davis next Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
The University of Denver swimming and diving team fell to Wyoming Saturday afternoon at the John Corbett Building in Laramie, Wyo. ... the Denver women lost 195-105 ... sophomore Samantha Corea won the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke with times of 56.19 and 2:03.61, respectively ... freshman Madeline Eyolfson finished first in the 200 breaststroke ... sophomore Bridgette McNally (Lone Tree, Colo.) won the 200 freestyle (1:54.65) ... the Pioneers will return to action Friday when they take on Utah.
University of Idaho sophomore Rachel Millet added two more Vandal records to her cache at the AT&T Winter Nationals at Austin, Texas ... in addition to the 100 butterfly record she broke on Friday, she added the 100 freestyle with her time of 50.26 ... also for Idaho, Kelsie Saxe was clocked in 2:20.54 in the 200 breaststroke ... Jamie Sterbis was timed in 2:02.38 in the 200 butterfly ... the Vandals will take a break and resume competition on Jan. 19 against New Mexico State.
New Mexico State (3-4)
The New Mexico State swimming and diving team travels to Moscow, Idaho for a dual meet with WAC foes Idaho, Friday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. ... Last season, the Aggies defeated the Vandals, 171-125, Jan. 21, 2012 in Las Cruces on senior day ... This is the last road meet of the season for NM State before heading to the WAC Championships in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 27-March 2 ... The Aggies conclude the regular season, Feb. 2, when they host in-state rival New Mexico in Las Cruces.
North Dakota (4-6-1)
The University of North Dakota women's swimming and diving team dropped a pair of decisions and garnered a tie in the third head-to-head result in the Florida Gulf Coast quad meet completed Saturday ... UND tied Georgia Southern 149.50-149.50 and lost match-ups with Liberty (158-135) and the host Eagles (236-63) ... Veronica Medon won the 100 backstroke, touching in 58.24 ... Medon later grabbed second place in the 200 backstroke with a 2:04.62, just .05 behind the winner ... Caitlin Quon earned a fourth place with a 2:12.18 showing in the 200 IM ... in the diving events, Rachael Waldbillig took second off both the 1- and 3-meter boards ... North Dakota will face Seattle, Wyoming and host Air Force on, Jan. 18-19.
Northern Arizona (4-4)
NAU swimming & diving team came up just one point short against Oregon State in a 147-146 loss and fell to No. 6 Arizona 221-76 in a challenging double-dual against PAC-12 competition ... the Lumberjack effort was led in the pool by freshman Ellie Morrissey who won two events over Oregon State ... swimming the event for the first time as a collegiate athlete, Morrissey finished fifth overall in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.39 seconds to finish ahead of the top OSU swimmer ... She followed with a time of 52.99 in the 100 free to again earn a win over the Beavers ... On the diving boards the Lumberjacks were led by senior Kristy Ardavanis, who placed second on 1-meter with a score of 262.05 to finish ahead of two Arizona divers, she third in the 3-meter.
Northern Colorado (0-5)
The Bears dropped both of Friday's duals, losing to CSU Bakersfield 167-132 and falling to San Jose State 187-107 ... juniors Courtney Van Oost and Gina Riggle each won one event and had a second-place finish ... senior diver Sara Moldenhauer finished in the top three on both boards ... Van Oost was victorious in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall first in 2:07.02 ... Riggle won the 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:25.01 ... Moldenhauer, a two-time WAC Diver of the Week, placed second on the one-meter and third on the three-meter boards after scoring 240.45 and 227.60, respectively ... the Bears host their final dual meet of the year on Jan. 26, welcoming New Mexico to the Butler-Hancock pool.
San Jose State (6-1)
Amy Kilby was the top SJSU diver last weekend at the Bruin Diving Invitational ... competing against more than 50 top West Coast collegiate divers, a few of whom participated in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships or the U.S. Olympic Team trials later in the spring, Kilby finished eighth in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter diving events ... the entire San Jose State women's swimming and diving team (6-1) takes its six-meet winning streak to the University of Nevada (3-2) for a non-conference dual meet, Saturday, January 19.
Seattle U (1-4)
The Seattle University women's swim team celebrated its' final home meet of the year by touching the wall first in all but two events during a 147-109 win over Whitworth Saturday ... Marina Pomar-Enders returned from injury to win the 500 yard freestyle from lane one with a time of 5:23.36 ... Karla Ruff touched the wall first in two events, winning the 200 yard freestyle in 1:57.32 and nabbing the fastest time in the 400 yard individual medley at 4:37.83 ... Kevlyn Richards won the 200 yard breaststroke race by finishing in 2:22.49 and also finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.17 ... The Redhawks will next travel to Colo. Springs to take on the AFA and North Dakota in a two-day meet, Jan. 18-19.
Athletes of the Week
Denver's Samantha Corea and San Jose State's Amy Kilby have been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 7-13.
Corea, a sophomore from Vancouver, British Columbia (Magee Secondary School), took first in the 100 backstroke (59.19) and the 200 backstroke (2:03.61) in Saturday's meet against Wyoming. Corea also finished third in the 100 butterfly (58.27). Corea swam the third leg of the of the 200 medley relay for the Pioneers, helping the Crimson and Gold to a second-place time of 1:46.08.
Kilby, a senior from Oklahoma City, Okla. (Putnam City North H.S.), made the final rounds and placed in the top ten in two out of three events at the Bruin Diving Invitational. She finished ninth out of 55 divers in the preliminary round of the 3-meter diving with a score of 267.30. Kilby advanced to the final round where she placed fifth with her score of 295.90 for a total of 563.20. Kilby finished ahead of one Olympic trial competitor, and three NCAA championships divers. She placed 12th in the 1-meter preliminary round and finished eighth overall with a total score of 490.10.
Other swimmers nominated: CSU Bakersfield freshman Nicolette Goncalves and Seattle U senior Kevlyn Richards.
